It has been nearly a decade sinceMinionscame out, quite literally blessing the eyes of fans of theDespicable Mefranchise. Even though the film received critically mixed reviews, it is still commendable for the outstanding voice acting A-listers did for it. This voice-acting cast notably included Sandra Bullock as well, who perfectly voiced the villainous Scarlet Overkill to life.

Of course, if this respective film is put in front of her other projects, it would serve as one of her most underrated pieces, especially considering how epically she performed despite the role being a contrast to her usual roles. But the real reason why Bullock deserves to be applauded is why she decided to voice Overkill in the first place, for it was all done for the sake of her son.
Sandra Bullock Voiced Scarlet Overkill for Her Son
Though there are multiple projects she has starred in to date, there have hardly been any animated ones whereSandra Bullockhad to lend just her voice to her respective character. Besides1998’sThe Prince of Egypt, 2015’sMinionis the only film until now that has earned a voiceover from her. That makes it worth discussing why she chose to take the flick on in the first place.
In an interview withBBC, the real reason behind it all finally came to light. “[I did it for] My son,” she confessed, smiling. “I wanted to do something that he could see, that I was in.” As it turns out, the real inspiration behind theMiss Congenialityactress donning the voice of Scarlett Overkill in the family comedy washer son, Louis Bardo Bullock, whom she adopted back in 2010.

Apparently, even though she had been candid with her son about her work, the then-five-year-old Louis didn’t seem to know back then what exactly his mum did. “He doesn’t know what I do. I’ve started telling him that I go and make stories, but he doesn’t quite care what that’s about – nor do I want him to,” Bullock had voiced her thoughts out loud back then in the 2015 interview.

When questioned if her son doesn’t realize the fact that his mother is actually one of Hollywood’s highest-paid movie stars, theExtremely Loud & Incredibly Closeactress’ candid response was:
[The phrase] ‘famous movie star’ doesn’t really mean anything, does it? We’re supposed to embarrass them! You’re not supposed to have respect from your kid.

Well, of course, as long as your kid is under the school-age range. Besides, as Bullock further went on to gush about her son, Louis loved physical humor and animation, and that was just what she expectedMinionsto sport. Plus, she loved to hear him laugh. That said, agreeing to take on the villainous Overkill was pretty much a no-brainer decision for her –a bit too easy to make.
Sandra Bullock Feels “Being a villain is a great thing” – But Only as an Actor
During the same interview, Sandra Bullock also addressed the fact that her role inMinionsserved as a contrast to her other usual roles, which even earned her the moniker of beingAmerica’s sweetheart. This is because Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever super-villainess, served as the film’s primary villain, and Bullock is famous for having been a sweetheart for the screens.
Nonetheless, as far as the ‘crabby’ part of playing the character was concerned, the actress felt being a villain was ‘a great thing’ as an actor. She explained, “As an actor, being a villain is a great thing. Everyone wants to be able to do that. And we’re human beings – we’re crabby – so to be able to be mean the entire time you’re working? It’s a great release.”

At the same time, playing the character wasn’t all too easy for her, for every single day was a different kind of struggle for her as Bullock emphasized, “It was one of the harder things I’ve done.” The reason behind this was simple: She was just used to using a prop or her body to sell something while acting, and having to do it just through her voice turned out to be ‘tricky’ for her.
“Just when I thought I did something well, I would hear, ‘We need you to do it again, we didn’t get it’ – and I’m like, ‘How could you not have gotten it?!’” Bullock shared. “Then I realized, they’re in the other room with their heads hanging low, not even looking at my body – they are just listening. Listening for the sound. It was not an easy road to get there, but I’m so glad I did it.”

Well, for one, Sandra Bullock most certainly seems to have sold it through only her voice just fine, for even though the story in the 2015 animated flick earned mixed reviews from fans and critics alike (seeRotten Tomatoes), it still managed to make a whopping $1.1 billion at the global box offices on its budget of only $74 million (viaBox Office Mojo), so that’s that as well.
Minions can currently be streamed on Netflix.
