Starfield. It’s a bit like Marmite, you either love it or you hate it. Here at DualShockers, we thought highly of Bethesda’s massive space RPG,giving it a 9/10. But that’s not to say that everybody feels the same way.

Even if you’re a die-hard Starfield fan, there’s no denying that the game’s concept art paints an entirely different image of what could have been. While Starfield’s concept has, obviously, been available to the public for quite some time, the images have recently resurfaced and sparked a pretty interesting discussion in the game’s community.

Starfield’s oceans aren’t as elusive as you may think.

Over on the Starfield subreddit, Reddit userBoris_Drewreignited the conversation over the game’s concept art, saying, “Starfield’s concept art looks more like Star Wars than the finished product.” The post has now gained well over 3,000 upvotes and had hundreds of responses from fellow players as they discuss what could have been.

Starfield Players Discuss What Could Have Been

If you haven’t seen them already, you may check out some of Starfield’s original concept art above. As you can see, the images are certainly more reminiscent of a Star Wars-esque game, as opposed to what was actually released late last year.

Reddit user Boris_Drew took aim specifically at two out of the five images, saying that nothing even remotely similar to the jungle-style planet nor the vast desert planet appears in the final product. “The colours are brighter and more alien than [Starfield’s],” the user said in regards to the desert planet image seen in one of the concept arts.

Fellow Starfied players agreed, with many expressing their disappointment over the final version of the game’s planets.

“Imagine if what we got was dense, limited maps like the ones we see in these concepts instead of the thousand, procedural generated planets…” Reddit userfernandes_327said.

It wasn’t just the jungle and desert-style planets that fans took shots at though, other users believe that Neon could do with a much more “murky underground” aesthetic, like the one seen in the original concept art.

“Neon was easily the most disappointing location in the game. So much promise that just didn’t deliver,” Reddit userThe_R4kesaid.

Unfortunately, Starfield went for scope over smaller, more detailed planets. While some love it, others believe that Starfield could have benefited much more by employing the phrase “less is more,” and I’m inclined to agree. Travelling across hundreds of different planets, only to see the same procedurally generated points of interest wore off incredibly quickly.

Reddit userTotoMac1summed it up perfectly by saying, “This just makes me sad seeing what could’ve been.”
