A new report fromBloomberghas revealed some behind-the-scenes stories surrounding the development ofRedfall, including the studio’s confusion about what the game was aiming to be. As people familiar with the project claim, the development leads were referencing two different sources of inspiration for what Redfall was supposed to be like, including Ubisoft’sFar Cryand Gearbox’sBorderlands.
Based on the report, the lack of a firm direction in developing Redfall frustrated the entire team. The project was described as a “multiplayer Arkane game” at the beginning, but the title itself was reportedly vague and confusing for the team, as Arkane has always been known for its single-player immersive-sim titles, and the developers were not quite sure how they could implement those core basics into a multiplayer game.

The report also claims that the team behind Redfall was too small for a multiplayer experience. After the studio began working on Redfall in 2018, some developers who wanted to work on single-player games rather than a multiplayer experience left the team over time. Reportedly, almost 70% of the team that worked onPreywas already gone by the end of Redfall’s development.
WhenMicrosoftacquiredBethesdaand ZeniMax Online back in 2020, the developers behind Redfall were reportedly hopeful that the new parent could change the direction of the game and make it a single-player experience, or even cancel the entire project. That being said, Microsoft left ZeniMax Online in charge of Redfall and decided not to intervene with the project.
Redfall was officially released last month after nearly a year of delays. The game received poor reviews and soon turned into one of the worst-reviewed titles of 2023, something that we don’t usually expect to see from games developed at Arkane Studios. The game was criticized mostly for its messy performance and buggy launch with dozens of technical issues and hiccups.
That being said, Arkane isn’t done with Redfall yet. The game is supposed to receive more content in the future, including new playable heroes.
