Mark Wahlberg was supposed to play the titular character Nathan Drake in the filmUnchartedduring its development in 2010. However, Wahlberg aged out of the role, leading to the casting of a much younger Tom Holland in 2017. The film was eventually released in 2022, with theFearactor joining the cast in a different role as Victor Sullivan aka Sully. Despite the film receiving mixed reviews and underperforming at the box office with a gross collection of just $407 million, a sequel is already in development.

One of the producers of the film, Charles Roven, revealed in August that the video game-based film is set to receive a sequel. Roven, who recently found success with his collaboration with Christopher Nolan onOppenheimer, also shared one reason for the sequel to outperform the first film.

However, the project faced prolonged delays, primarily due to the plethora of directors and screenwriters joining and leaving. Even after Mark Wahlberg wasreplacedbyTom Hollandin the titular role, the film faced similar issues. At one point, the script was leaked as part of the Sony Pictures hack of 2015 (via Gamespot). When the project was finally set to begin production with Ruben Fleischer at the helm in 2020, COVID-19 posed yet another headache for the film.
Unchartedwas finally released in February 2022, a time when the film industry was still grappling with the impacts of COVID-19. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but the audience seemed to embrace it when it later became available for home viewing. When The Hollywood Reporter asked the film’s producer Charles Roven about theUnchartedsequel, he offered an optimistic answer.

Roven shared that the team had a good time filming the movie. However, what particularly fueled their consideration for a sequel was the positive reception from people, even those unfamiliar with the video games. Roven shared withTHR:
“Oh yeah! We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie. So we are definitely looking to make another one of those.”

Both Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland are expected to return to their roles. In December 2023, while promoting his recent filmThe Family Plan, Wahlberg revealed toThe Directthat at least one draft of thescript of the sequelhad been written. He went on to joke about sporting a mustache for the sequel since he was seen having one in the final scene of the previous film.

The film had a 40% approval rating onRotten Tomatoes, with the website’s consensus mentioning that the film was“a disappointing echo of superior adventure films.”However, it is notable that the audience score for the film was 90%.

Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman echoed similar sentiments, stating that the film was“watchable in a thin ‘Raiders of the Lost National Treasure of the Fast & Furious Caribbean’ way.”The major criticisms of the film were its inferior action sequences compared to the video game series andAntonio Banderas‘s wasted role as a poorly written villain.
While it remains unclear which game storyline will be adapted for the second film, fans are excited to see a sequel for this action-adventure film.Unchartedis now available for streaming on Hulu.
