When it comes to iconic superhero costumes, fans can be very passionate about any changes or updates that are made to their favorite characters’ looks. Recently, James Gunn’sSuperman(formerly known asSuperman Legacy)officially debuted its official David Corenswet Superman suit early on Monday afternoon.

Superman: Legacy

Taking on Threads, Gunn shared the first look of Superman, who can be seen pulling on his boots while sitting in a chair. It is a rather strange look, though. Moreover, it has been noted that the suit appears a little baggy on Corenswet (especially on shoulders) and does not exactly appear to be the ‘muscle clinging’ type from this perspective. But one thing is sure: We have not seen this kind of linework on other suits before.

Corenswet’s ‘baggy’ Superman suit created quite a stir among fans who expressed varying opinions about the new look. But, haven’t we been here before? Remember the mix of skepticism and curiosity that buzzed through the air when Robert Pattinson donned the iconic cowl for the first time?

Why David Corenswet’s ‘Baggy’ Superman Suit Deserves a ‘Chance’

James Gunn’s upcomingSupermanflick has a lot riding on it, and he is doing a great job building buzz before it opens in theaters. In addition to confirming the movie’s June 13, 2025, release date, the director posted the first image of David Corenswet dressed as Man of Steel onThreads.

Gunn continued by saying:

“The above photo was taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera.”

Superman may have already fought a sinister force because, as one can see, the costume’s chest area appears burned.Even though some fans have already mistaken Corenswet for Henry Cavill, the ‘S’ design and the red trunks are sufficient to set this costume apart from the one thatThe Witcherstar wore in the previous cinematic adaptation of the character.

Nevertheless, it also features a glimpse of Cornswet as Clark, and his distinctive Superman hair curl is visible. The internet has been inundated with passionate responses following his debut in a somewhat ‘baggy’ Superman suit. Let’s see a few reactions:

Bring it!!!! Loved what Snyder did and I look forward to the new chapter with David and Gunn . This toxicity is crazy, I was iffy about Battinsons first look as Batman but the suit has grown on me over time. People need to give this a chance.

Yeah I’m waiting to see him in motion. Sometimes the costumes just need to be on screen in the movie to click visually.

Exactly my point. You think Zack would approve of that behavior while you fly the banner on your Twitter page? I was there for the campaigns to get the Snyder Cut, and we won that War. ZSJL was dropped and Snyder’s Vision realized. Now he’s on to better things. It’s time to grow…

Pattinson cowl is the only thing I wasn’t crazy about … this suit looks good he’s got the red trunks too

Agree my dude with hold judgment until after you experience it!

— Corey Shane (@CoreyLafon)June 26, 2025

So true. I think people are hating just to hate. The suit looks spectacular imo.

Similarly, whenRobert Pattinson’sfirst Batman lookwas revealed, fans had a visceral reaction to the dark and brooding style of the costume. As one fan pointed out, the reactions to theTwilightstar’s first Batman look were unequivocally intense, yet, as history proved, premature concerns about iconic costumes have often faded into applause with time.

Thus, why should the reaction to Superman’s new threads be the end of the world, when the caped crusader’s evolution has shown us that change can be a superpower?

James Gunn’sSuperman: David Corenswet’s Vision for Kal-El

Speaking withEWin 2019,David Corenswetnoted that he had beentold numerous timeshow much he resembledHenry Cavill, who had played Superman in the theatrical versions ofJustice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, andMan of Steel. In Corenswet’s words:

“It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me. But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”

As he said, he yearns to explore a refreshing, “optimistic” take on the character that probably channels the nostalgic vibrancy of yesteryear’s Superman. Also, we must also acknowledge that Corenswet’s physical transformation is flawless. Based onearlier leaked images and videosof the new Man of Steel, it seems that the strategy of making him look like Cavill to win back the fans’ affection was prosperous—even fans couldn’t help but agree!

Well, if Gunn and his crew wind up filming scenes outside with Corenswet, hopefully, more looks at the Superman costume will be forthcoming. The film also starred Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, Edi Gathegi, Rachel Brosnahan, and Isabela Merced.
