Despite Abby’s unmatched charm, this moment showed that even the most beloved characters weren’t immune to a bit of on-screen absurdity. Pauley Perrette Opens Up About How She Changed Abby Sciuto’s Character onNCIS

Pauley Perrette spilled the tea on herNCISdays, and wow, it’s a doozy. She revealed that early on, she was pushed to deliver a filthy joke as Abby Sciuto. Perrette during herinterview withHELLO!asserted that she was horrified when it aired,

In one of the first episodes, there was a really dirty joke – and I never understand dirty jokes or double entendres – and I didn’t know what it meant, and it aired and I was horrified, not only because of my own blaring naivete, but because I just told a filthy joke on camera, and it’s just not what I do

But instead of letting Abby go full-on saucy and sexual, Perrette made sure to steer her character in a more empowering direction. She recalled,

And that’s who they wanted Abby to be in the beginning: there were parts of her that were going to be really saucy and sexual and I said, ‘No, there’s a better way to do this,’ and as that notion was being formed, that’s when I started realizing the power of her being good.

And damn, did it work. Abby turned into more than just a quirky forensic genius—she became a role model for a whole generation of girls. Thanks to Abby, thousands of young women got inspiredto dive into math, science, and forensics. That’s what we call the “Abby Effect,” and it’s legit. She alluded,

My character got so big internationally – as it should have been because she was wonderful – and that was not by accident. I put a lot of thought [into her] because I knew that she had the potential to be a wonderful role model to young girls.

Pauley Perrette Reveals She Was Blindsided by Cote de Pablo’s SuddenNCISExit

Pauley Perrette didn’t see it coming whenNCISco-star Cote de Pablo bailed just20 minutes before the news dropped. De Pablo, aka Ziva David, packed up and left in 2013 right before Season 11, fed up with how her character was being treated. Perrette said,

It was huge news to us. I found out literally 20 minutes before it was released in the press. But we love her. She’s our friend. She had a personal decision to make. No one wanted her to leave. There was no drama…there really isn’t much to tell. There really wasn’t any drama. But we love her, we respect her and that’s what happened.

Fans were blindsided, too.David McCallum(aka Ducky) couldn’t wrap his head around it, saying he didn’t get how she just vanished before filming started. Crazy, right?
