While Tom Cruise and Paramount have enjoyed a lucrative relationship for years, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing in paradise. Despite numerous points of friction, one significant issue arose when Cruise declined to participate in the proposedMission: ImpossibleandDays of Thunderseries on Paramount+. The reasons behind this decision remain a question that many have yet to find answers for.

Paramount Wanted to Make aMission ImpossibleSpin-off Series for Paramount+

While Paramount+ has found success by tapping into theStar Trekfranchise, its content library fails to match the extensive offerings offered by other streaming platforms in competition. Keeping aside the streaming giants such as Netflix, Paramount+ doesn’t even come close to the fellow studio streaming platforms. Thus, the prospect of leveragingTom Cruise‘s most successful IPs on Paramount+ would have been a significant win for the company. But Cruise made sure it wasn’t.

According toThe Hollywood Reporter, the company made an attempt to launch a series inspired by the racing action filmDays of Thunder, in which Cruise starred back in 1990. The actor was quick to shut it all down.

After that, Cruise reportedly also dismissed the notion of developing aMission: Impossibleseries for the streaming platform, which, to be honest, would have been a gold mine for the company. It is now bizarre to think that this was even a considered move at the time. Given the actor most recently staunchly disagreed to put the seventh installment of the saga on the steaming platform after a mere 45-day theatrical window.

Interestingly, in the late 2000s, Paramount even considered severing ties with Tom Cruise. Initially planning to write Cruise out of theMission: Impossibleseries in favor of Jeremy Renner around 2008, the idea was abandoned by the release ofGhost Protocol in 2011.

Why did Tom Cruise Turn the Idea Down?

While Tom Cruise strongly opposed the idea of launching any spin-off series on the streaming platform, many enthusiasts find the concept intriguing and would have enjoyed seeing it play out on screen. The mystery surrounding the actor’s rejection of theDays of Thunderspin-off persists, with some speculating that he aims to keep the window open for a grand comeback movie.

Despite interesting prospects, Cruise seems focused on leveraging the comeback movie opportunity, aiming it to be as monumental as the success ofTop Gun: Maverick.

However, when it comes toMission: Impossible, whose concept originally stemmed from the CBS 60s show, it is plausible to speculate that Cruise prefers to prioritize movies. This inclination may be attributed to his love for theater releases and ongoing efforts to revive them post the significant pandemic setback.

Mission: Impossiblestill stands as a hit saga, and Cruise seems reluctant to let go of its potential as a guaranteed seat filler. Considering the enormity of its IP, directing full focus to movies can be said to be a wise decision that aligns with both the studio’s and the actor’s visions.
