The cook of the Straw Hat Pirates inOne Piece, Vinsmoke Sanji, is one of the most powerful characters in the entire crew. He doesn’t have any weakness except women. Sanji follows a chivalrous code that forbids him from hurting women at any cost. However, along with this chivalrous code, Eiichiro Oda also added a little bit of perverted behavior to add a humorous element to Sanji’s personality.

Sanji

He is obsessed with the female characters ofOne Pieceand instantly falls in love with them no matter the situation. He is constantly flirting with other women, and despite that, he has had little to no luck in getting them to love him back. In fact, in the entire series and the hundred female characters he has flirted with, there have been only two characters who loved him back.

The first was Charlotte Pudding, who was about to marry Sanji, and the second was Some from Wano, who was saved by Sanji during the Onigashima war. However, Sanji never loved Some Back, and it was a big point of concern for fans as Sanji is desperately searching for love. But there is a deep trauma behind Sanji’s trait that Eiichiro Oda has foreshadowed in the series.

Sanji’s Flirtatious Nature inOne Piece

When Sanji was first introduced inOne Piece, he was portrayed as a cool chef who could not only cook great food but was also good with women. But as the story moved forward and Sanji joined the crew, it was revealed that he evidently had a habit of flirting with other women. Sometimes, this flirting would also feel a little perverted and creep others out.

Eiichiro Odadecided to use this aspect of Sanji’s nature as a comedic element to his personality. It became a running gag for him where he would act like a perverted character and would face the consequences of his creepiness. Not only that, he would even get jealous when other characters like Zoro would get close to other female characters.

While there have been some fans who criticized Oda and Sanji for this behavior, the majority ofOne Piecefans understand that the only intention behind all this is comedy. It perfectly works in parallel with Sanji’s chivalrous nature andadds a little more substance to his character.

Sanji’s character is more than his Thriller Bark Arc.

Sanji’s Understanding of Love in One Piece

Although Sanji has been constantly trying to find love inOne Piece, he has a flaw in his character that doesn’t allow him to fall for girls who like him back. The reason behind this is connected to his traumatic childhood. Sanji has never evidently clearly understood the concept of love because he lost his mother and his father was abusive and only used him for his own goals.

Sanji had to survive most of his life on his own as he ran away from home and was hated by his own family. He had to go through a lot of traumatic experiences as a child.

The only person who loved him was his mother, but she died because of a disease and thus never could explain tohim truly what love was. The only understanding of love he got was from his mentor Zeff, who taught him to be chivalrous in every aspect of life.

Thus, Oda wanted to foreshadow his traumatic past through his flirtatious behavior and hint at his lack of understanding of love. Sanji is indeed one of the best-written characters, and even his controversial behavior inOne Piecehas a sad meaning behind it.
