Who Plays Buggy In One Piece?
American actor Jeff Ward plays Buggy in the One Piece live-action, who has accumulated a solid body of work since his debut in 2005 within the Law & Order: Criminal Intent series, playing Darwin Mondale for one episode. In the anime adaptation, the English voice actor for Buggy is Brian Zimmerman, and the Japanese voice actor is Shigeru Chiba.
During his career, Ward has appeared in the 2015 series The Mentalist, the 2017 series Channel Zero, and the 2021 series Hacks. However,Ward performed in 45 episodes of the 2017 series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. playing Deke Shaw for Marveland also became a regular on the 2021 series Brand New Cherry Flavor. In addition to his appearance in One Piece, Ward has an upcoming role in The Descendant.
Surprisingly, Ward’s performance as Buggy has garnered a following of social media users who now appear to have a crush on the clown, posting several edits of the character to pop songs. Several of these videos have raked in millions of views, withPolygonspeaking to one Buggy fan who explained part of the character’s appeal as “good vibes, thick thighs, and a small waist.”
One Piece Recap: Welcome To The Circus
At the end of episode 1,Romance Dawn, the pirate Cabaji (Sven Ruygork) reports to Buggy the Clown (Jeff Ward) in a circus tent, informing him of the fight he witnessed between the Marines and Straw Hats in Shells Town, as the antagonist wants the Grand Line map for himself.
Jumping into episode 2,The Man in the Straw Hat, Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), Zoro (Makenyu), and Nami (Emily Rudd) have set sail while the latter attempts to crack the lock on the safe containing the Grand Line map. After they are successful in obtaining the map,red smoke bombs are thrown on board the ship, and the Straw Hats are knocked unconscious. The trio later wakes up trapped within a crate, and they soon realize they areone of the attractions within Buggy’s circusafter the crate breaks open. Being observed by a hostage audience, Buggy puts the Straw Hats through a harrowing time, attaching Zoro to a rotating board, holding Nami in a cage, and trapping Luffy in a tank slowly filling with water.
After Zoro and Nami manage to escape, we learn thatBuggy’s real problem is that these lesser-known pirates have the Grand Line map, and he doesn’t, claiming he is the best pirate in the East Blue and he’ll stop at nothing to get the map. It also becomes apparent thatBuggy is another Devil Fruit eater like Luffy, which causes his body to separate into pieces. After Luffy is freed from the tank in the nick of time, it’s revealed to Buggy that Luffy has been hiding the map in his stomach all along. The trio manages to defeat Buggy by hiding his body parts in separate boxes, and they later free the townspeople.

After defeating Buggy, the antagonist reappears from time to time in the series, including the denouement in episode 8,Worst in the East, when the Straw Hats are fighting againstArlong(McKinley Belcher III) and the fishmen’s attack on Coco Village. Buggy claims to help Zoro and Sanji if they reconnect his head with his body, which they do, but the clown retreats immediately after. At the end of the episode, we seeBuggy connecting withAlvida(Ilia Isorelýs Paulino), who join forces to track down Luffy and claim the new bounty on his head.
Who Is Buggy In The Source Material?
In the manga and anime adaptation, Buggy the Star Clown is captain of the Buggy Pirates anda co-leader of the Buggy and Alvida Alliance. Like Luffy, he is also a Devil Fruit eaterwho ate the Bara Bara no Mi variant that allows his body to break into pieces and reassemble(which also contributed to his smaller stature in several appearances). Buggy was previously an apprentice in the Roger Pirates withShanks, and the character becomes the main antagonist of the Orange Town Arc and a minor antagonist in the Loguetown Arc.
Introduced as a slim pirate with blue hair and the red nose of a clown, Buggy always sported makeup like the circus performers. However, after the time jump in the series,Buggy had grown significantly larger thanks to his Devil Fruit powersand donned a red cloak around his mass with spikier hair. During the Impel Down Arc, the character had crossbones painted on his face, and he also wore a black and white striped prisoner outfit while in the Grand Prison.
Existing as a narcissistic villain, Buggy actually had many allies throughout the franchise, including Alvida, Galdino, and Crocodile, before their relationship went south when Buggy hadn’t paid his debt after using Crocodile’s money to open Buggy’s Delivery services.After becoming a member of the Seven Warlords of the Seaduring his delivery service time, Buggy was then stripped of his Warlord title after the system fell through but waslater seen as one of the Four Emperorsafter Kaido and Big Mom were out of the picture.
