Avatar: The Last Airbenderhas arguably gone to great lengths to balance its magic system, making sure that each classical element had some edge over the other so that fight scenes between multiple elements could be more dynamic. However, one scene that has been making the rounds on Reddit, has gotten fans thinking about whether firebending might have an edge over metalbending after all.

Metalbending was discovered about halfway through the story ofAvatar: The Last Airbenderby Toph, which means that there might not have been many opportunities for the bending art to face a more established element in the world of Avatar like Fire. However, one scene in the show might have cued some fans in about how the element would fare against it, after all.
Avatar Roku’s firebending could completely annihilate metal chains, and perhaps other forms of metal too
In a scene, posted by Reddit useru/Its-your-boy-warden, audiences can see Avatar Roku possessing Aang to launch a volley of fireballs, ones that are able to melt away the chains that have been holding Katara, Sokka, and the Fire Nation priest, hostage. This would indicate that if a competent enough firebender was to face off against a metalbender, the chances are that the firebender would come out on top.
After Metalbending, Avatar: The Legend of Korra Sequel Will Introduce an Even Scarier Version of Earthbending (Theory)
However, there are several things that this claim forgets to take into account. To begin with, Avatar Roku is not a random firebender who got good. He is the Avatar, who has the combined knowledge of all the previous benders with him, along with their abilities. Further, just because the fire could melt away stagnant chains, it does not indicate that firebending couldoverpower metalbendingin any reasonable manner. Water puts out fire pretty easily, yet we have seen firebenders wreak havoc on waterbenders time and time again.
The clip that is posted is accompanied by the caveat that ‘extreme skill’ might be required for firebending to best metalbending, which sort of works for any element. A bender who is sufficiently skilled in his bending art could wreak devastation regardless of what his opponent wields in battle.

Avatar: The Last Airbenderhas always had very balanced fight scenes
Regardless of which element was being wielded in battle,Avatar: The Last Airbendermanaged to create very balanced fight scenes, with only differences in skill dictating who would win a particular fight. Even when characters are going up against the Avatar, who is supposed to be the master of four elements, they have not only been able to hold their own but also outmaneuver him/her, even in the Avatar state, without the power-up feeling like it was nerfed for the convenience of the plot.
This comes down to the show’s effort at being able to deliver a solid magic system, one that not only accommodates the narrative needs of the story but is consistently used in new and creative ways to create exciting and engaging fight sequences.
