It is that time of the month again when veteran writer George R. R. Martin adds a little more delay in writingThe Winds of Winterby updating his blog. Although we do love to hear from him, it seems thatThe Winds of Winteris taking quite a long time.

George R.R. Martin

On his blog, the writer shared quite some iconic thoughts about the recent world of television series. With directors like Denis Villeneuve adapting theDunefranchise into movies, and Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks creating Shōgun, the world is really turning to the literature realm once again.

George R. R. Martin Is Impressed By Shōgun!

Based on the novel by James Clavell, Shōgun tells the story of the historical account of the year 1600 during the Azuchi–Momoyama period and its end and the usher in the Edo period. George R. R. Martin was one of the people who read the original Shōgun novel when it came out in 1975.

Taking a break from writing his upcoming book titledThe Winds of Winter, author R.R. Martin took to his blog (titledNot a Blog) to talk about some of the more recent books to TV adaptations. Since his own books (A Song of Ice and Fire) were adapted into the famous TV seriesGame of Thrones,George R. R. Martinknows better than most.

“George R. R. Martin is not your b*tch”: Neil Gaiman Came to Defend Game of Thrones Creator Against Fans’ Never Ending Demands

Although his own books were converted into a television series, Martin had quite some controversial things to say. While stating that most adaptations are a failure, the author had nothing but praises for Shōgun!

‘The book is the book, the film is the film,’ they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound.   Then they make the story their own. They never make it better, though.   Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse.

He further wrote,

Once in a while, though, we do get a really good adaptation of a really good book, and when that happens , it deserves applause. I can came across one of those instances recently, when I binged the new FX version of SHOGUN.

“To beg him to do 10 seasons of 10 episodes”: Not Listening to George R. R. Martin’s Request For Game of Thrones Was the Worst Mistake HBO Could Have Committed With the Show

The author continued to talk about how good the live-action series was and how impressed he was with the adaptation. Being a fan of fantasy and historical novels, Martin loved reading James Clavell’s Shōgun as well as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

However, the author did reveal that there were some flaws in the latter books and that all wasn’t as happy-go-lucky as written in J.R.R. Tolkien’s magnum opus!

George R. R. Martin Openly Criticizes J.R.R. Tolkien’sThe Lord of the Rings!

We all know that Tolkien’s world of fantasy has been the basis of several authors who were inspired by the realms of Middle Earth and The Silmarillion to write their own. Author George R. R. Martin was also one of those authors and he has publicly praised Tolkien’s work oftentimes.

However, one thing that Martin doesn’t seem to like about Tolkien’s works is that the author doesn’t dwell in the gray area much. In a 2014 interview withRolling Stone, the author revealed that there was one thing wrong with the world of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Viggo Mortensen Aragorn

Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple.

On the other hand, George R. R. Martin’s books indeed showed the difference between a king and his people. From battles to incest, A Song of Ice and Fire clearly shows why medieval times were not at all good for the common people.

Martin’s much-praised series Shōgun received a rating of 8.7/10 on IMDB and a whopping 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is currently available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
