While Nolan was eager to bring the acclaimed actor on board, it was Caine himself who turned down the offer. Nolan recalled during a conversation that the 91-year-old actor denied starring in the film as he desired to retire from acting.

“I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews… What am I going to do that will beat this?”he said. He also shared that he rejected his final film three times, as he already considered himself retired.
The actor also considered another role afterThe Great Escaper.However, he denied it upon realizing it was a minor part.“They’re not going to be the lead,”he said before adding,“So I thought, I might as well leave with all this.”
