EveryOne Piecefan knows and was devastated by the events of the Marineford Arc. Ace’s story is amongst the subtly tragic ones in the series. He might not have gone through a genocide like Robin or lost all of his friends like Brook, but he went through a different kind of pain.

Portgas D. Ace was always great at hiding his pain but during his execution, it was evident. However, fans have noticed that perhaps Eiichiro Oda foreshadowed it ages ago inOne Piecethrough one simple motif: his hat.

Ace’s hat is adorned with several accessories. It has red beads on the rim to match his necklace and the side straps meet with a bull medallion. Curiously, it also features two faces on it, one which is smiling while the other frowns.

These faces caught the attention of fans to two of the most significant events inOne Piece. Both of them had an immense impact on the world, shaking pirates and the World Government. It carries on to this day, even when we’re already in the Elbaph Arc.

The tragic father and son relationship Ace shared with Roger

The Marineford Arc reveals that Ace isn’t Luffy’s blood brother and his biological father is the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. It also exposed how deeply traumatized Ace was byhis upbringing as the son of one of the most notorious and “worst criminals” in the world.

It’s tragic that Ace and Roger met the same fate and were marked too dangerous to live. While the Pirate King had accepted his end, his son was only 20 years old and though he believed he deserved to die, he wasn’t ready.

The faces on Ace’s orange hat are symbols of the father and son’s reactions on the execution platform. While Gol D. Roger kept smiling and gave a triumphant speech, Ace was visibly sorrowful. One Piecefans have just noticed how the faces mirror the two precisely.

Roger’s execution in One Piece.

Eiichiro Odais known to be the master of foreshadowing but even fans are speechless at this subtle detail. It meansAce’s execution was always set in stone. Some fans are calling Oda “an alien” for his beautiful writing.

Although the detail is undeniably brilliant, fans do have to recognize it might just be a coincidence. Although Ace did frown on the execution block, he smiled when he died in Luffy’s arms.

Was it intentional or just random details on Ace’s hat?

While some fans do consider the smiley faces on his hat as foreshadowing and mirroring Ace’s death to Gol D. Roger’s, some argue it’s genuinely just for aesthetics and not to dive too deep.

The Will of D. clan members, specifically Ace and both of his parents, have died with smiles on their faces. Even when Luffy was threatened with beingexecuted by Buggyin the Loguetown Arc, he faced it with a smile. Smoker is the first person to point out how similar this was to Gol D. Roger.

One Piece Fans Vote the Most Handsome Man in Anime- Sanji and Ace Fans Won’t Be Happy at All

Ace’s hat, therefore, was most likely a quirky aesthetic choice rather than a serious foreshadowing of his death. Ultimately, he died with a smile, knowing he was loved by everyone. Still, it’s a neat detail and a nice connection to his father, if this theory is true.
