Jensen Ackles had a hard time playing Michael inSupernatural

Jensen Acklesdebuted inthe role of Dean WinchesterwhenSupernaturalpremiered back in 2005. The series gained a dedicated audience, turning Ackles into a household name. After years of playing the charismatic Dean, Ackles got to portray another character when his character became possessed by archangel Michael during seasons 13 and 14.

During a conversation withTV Lineat the San Diego Comic-Con, Ackles talked about playing a new role on the show after having played Dean for so long. As a result, the actor admitted to having some trouble with the role. He said:

It’s been almost a daunting challenge. Jared [Padalecki] has had an opportunity to play different characters. He’s gotten to play an angel, he’s gotten to play Lucifer… and not just different variations of Sam Winchester, whereas [until now,] Dean has only played different variations of Dean.

Ackles explained that since he had only played different iterations of Dean it was challenging for him to play a darker version of Michael and revealed he was initially nervous when tackling the part.

However, Ackles also admitted that the feedback he received was mostly positive and it excited him to be playing essentially a brand new character on the same series. After being possessed by Michael in season 13, Dean continued to be a vessel for the archangel in season 14, where Ackles put his own spin on the role.

Jensen Ackles discussed developing his take on the popularSupernaturalvillain

Actor Christian Keyes initially played the role of Michael before the latter took on Dean as his primary vessel. As a result, Ackles had to slowly develop his take on the villain and discussed the process of doing so in an interview withEntertainment Weekly.

Ackles admitted that he was initially floundering a little when he played the new character in the first couple of episodes. However, over the hiatus the actor worked on adding his spin to the character, stating:

I was originally trying to take the traditional angel approach. I thought I’d take that method of this omniscient being that is essentially humorless. I quickly 180-ed on that after reading through a few things a few times.

Ackles explained that while there wasn’t a whole lot of comedy written into Michael’s scenes, he would read between the lines to infuse humor into the character’s scenes.

From Ackles’ words, it is clear that the actorhad to put in a lot of effortfor playing Michael, and the same is reflected in his performance with this iteration of the villain proving popular with the fans.
