X-Men: The Animated Seriesis often counted as one of the greatest adaptations of superhero comics, placing it among the likes ofJustice League Unlimited,Spider-Man: The Animated Series, andAvengers: Earth Mightiest Heroes.

The Animated Series served as the definitive version of the characters for a generation of superhero fans. However, despite the massive popularity that eventually came the show’s way, Hollywood was not very confident about X-Men headlining their own series, and for almost 10 years, the series was a no-go.
Hollywood did not believe that X-Men could be popular
Eric Lewald, the series creator, talked in theThe Making of ‘X-Men: The Animated Series‘interview published by Marvel about how the series had a tough time getting picked up. He revealed:
Margaret [Loesch] had wanted to do the show for ten years. Nobody in Hollywood believed the X-Men could be popular. She’d pitch it and pitch it. They said, “No, this is too weird. This is too inside-comic-bookie.” So Margaret could never get it sold. When she got ready to do it, she picked the people that she thought would be the strongest, and she immediately went to Larry and Will.

Margaret Loesch was the TV Producer who was responsible for bringing the X-Men and Power Rangers to Fox Kids, both of which would go on to be widely popular and influential in their respective genres.X-Men ’97would finally be greenlit in February of 1992 before it started airing and adapting some of the best X-Men storylines from the comics.
IfX-Men: The Animated Serieshad never come about, there would be noX-Men ’97
X-Men ’97was more than just a revival of the originalX-Men: The Animated Series, and it definitely put in the effort to be its own thing. Despite it being a sequel series, the show was able to offer a fresh take on the X-Men, especially after Fox’s versions of the character dominated the mainstream for the longest time.

X-Men: The Animated Seriesallowed for the characters to have a jumping-off point in that modern setting, which allowed for a show likeX-Men ’97to make the kind of impact that it did. Had it not been for the show that came before,X-Men ’97would have probably found itself being just as brilliant, but with a lot smaller crowd watching it.
X-Men ’97can be streamed on Disney+
