Taylor Sheridan has brought to life some of the most popular shows on television in the past few years. His gritty writing and unflinching look at what life throws at you out of the blue has been hailed by millions of fans worldwide.

With neo-westerns and tense thrillers, he has built an impressive repertoire for himself with his movies. Interestingly, though, in recent years, there has been a faction of the fandom that has called him out for his writing as well.

According to them, his writing has grown lazy, and just downright bland, that just follows the same formula across genres. Another complaint they have against theYellowstonecreator is how preachy his shows have become. What makes this interesting is the fact that Taylor Sheridan had noted his dislike for the same thing before.

Taylor Sheridan claimed to hate preachy movies like Tom Hanks’Forrest Gump

Taylor Sheridanhas claimed multiple times how much he dislikes movies or shows that have a preachy tone to them. As in, movies that spoon feed a particular idea to the audience instead of confronting them to think for themselves.

As such, the director claimed in aninterview at the Utah Film Awardsa few years back, he makes“elevated action films”.Mainly because the action and thriller genres are“exciting”for the audience as much as they are for him.

Nobody wants to go see a movie that preaches at them. I don’t want to see a movie that preaches at me. Even if it’s exciting.

However, he added that he wanted a film to force him to“think and ask questions”without boring him to death. Sheridan claimed this was his problem withTom Hanks’ Oscar-winning movieForrest Gump. He stated in aninterview with Joe Roganthat he couldn’t“stand to pay money and have somebody preach to me their ideas.”

That’s the reason I hated Forrest Gump… this doddering fking idiot is the only guy who can figure out the world? Everybody else around him… he’s just gonna go on a fking run across America and everyone’s gonna follow him and that’s gonna heal the country? I just was like, ‘What is this sh*t?’

Well, many have actually agreed with Sheridan on his perspective onForrest Gump.

Unfortunately, though, it seems likeSheridan has turned into what he hates the mostover the years. Especially when it comes to preaching.

As stated above,Yellowstoneis possibly one of Taylor Sheridan’s if not one of TV’s most popular shows ever. Many have praised the show for how it delves into farm life in the Wild West. Others, meanwhile, have applauded the neo-western for not shying away from the brutality one could face in such testing circumstances.

Interestingly, though, over the years, many have shifted their perspectiveon the writer-director for exactly this reason. According to them, his shows, as well as movies have just become a constant rinse and repeat of the samethemes sprinkled with bloody violence, infuriating characters, and just bad writing.

His recent Paramount showLandman, too, faced the same criticism. Moreover, people seemingly detest the ultra-macho, hard-edged, gratuitously violent stories he tries to preach without any fresh substance, or well-written characters to support those themes.

Controversies surrounding popular writers or their writings aren’t exactly new. FromGeorge R.R. Martin, toColleen Hoover, many have faced criticism for their writings over the years. There are also others likeNeil Gaiman, who take controversies up a notch with allegationsagainst them.

Nonetheless, a writer becoming what they despise is still somewhat of a rarity. As a result, it’ll be interesting to see if Taylor Sheridan continues to walk the same path or manages to break free of being stereotyped like this with his new projects.

Yellowstoneis available on Peacock.
