With AI (Artifical Intelligence) being used more and more in game development, one of the biggest worries game developers have about tech is that it might replace people, which would lead to more developers losing jobs.

While some might think that machines can never have the same creativity as a human, not everyone is on board with this idea. Some of the people who think game developers will lose jobs due to AI are Japanese game developers who have recently discussed it.

Yoko Taro Thinks We’ll Live Long Enough To See AI Takeover Game Creators' Jobs

Taro and other Japanese developers shared their thoughts in a recent interview with Japanese gaming publicationFamitsu(machine translated), where the developers were candid about AI’s encroachment on game development.

Partaking in the roundtable chat were Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi of Too Kyo Games. For those unaware, Kodaka is best known for creating the Danganronpa series, while Uchikoshi is popular in Japan for the Zero Escape visual novel games. Joining the duo are Jiro Ishii, the producer of the adventure video game Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, and Yoko Taro, the game director most known for the Nier franchise.

Uchikoshi comments that while there are still games he wants to make, he is worried that if AI continues to evolve, adventure games made by AI may become mainstream. This prompted a response from Taro, who said, “I also think that game creators will all be put out of work by AI. In 50 years, game creators may be treated like bards.”

When asked if AI can create the fantastic worlds and stories that these game developers craft, Yoko answered matter-of-factly, “Of course, it can.” Adding, “think a good AI would foresee that and become the writer. For example, it wouldn’t output the manuscript exactly as it was told.”

Taro goes into further detail on his explanation on how this would work, “I think that eventually we will move from an era where we have to imitate the style of our favorite creators to an era where we can have the AI generate the scenarios we like. It will be like the recommendation ability is constantly improving, where AI will determine the preferences of users and skillfully generate route branches that they will want to read”.

Horizon’s Burning Shores DLC Will Finally Show Us What The PS5 Can Do

Burning Shores' PS5 exclusivity means we’ll get to see the power of Sony’s flagship.

While Taro’s statement is a bit worrying, it’s one I hope doesn’t come true. Whether we like it or not, AI is here to stay, it seems. Sonyhasconfirmed that it is experimenting with it for games, andMicrosoft even has an AI-generatedgamethat you can play now on your browser.

Let’s hope this doesn’t mean we’ll get uninspired AI-generated artwork and games. Another developer who recently spoke out against AI is Balatro-developer LocalThunkwho had some harsh words about the tech.

NieR developer Yosuke Saito hints that a major franchise announcement is happening in 2025.
