The Pussycat Dolls were a remarkable sensation during the 2000s, but what is the current status of Nicole Scherzinger, the lead singer? For those who haven’t heard, she’s gearing up to make her Broadway debut in a fresh take on a musical directed by Jamie Lloyd.

However, despite all the praise from critics, she didn’t seem too thrilled about being cast at first. Even though she has all the qualities the character needs, she hinted that there was an unrelated factor that played a big part in her getting the role. Scherzinger is thankful and excited, but it’s not quite how she envisioned stepping onto the stage.
Nicole Scherzinger Wasn’t Exactly Thrilled About Her Role On Broadway
Nicole Scherzingerlooks like she’s back in the spotlight, but not exactly in the music scene. After winning the Olivier Award for Best Actress for her role inSunset Boulevardin London, the singer is now a strong contender for the Tony Award next year, and is all set to make her Broadway debut. Taking on the role of Norma Desmond, a character often seen as a fading talent, Scherzinger expressed immense gratitude for the chance to shine at the heart of musical theater. In a chat withVogue, she shared that she’s living out a dream.

Actors Who Were Devastated After Not Getting These Iconic Roles
Still, long before the play was even in the running for a New York stage, she admitted she wasn’t completely thrilled about being cast for a pretty understandable reason. Since her character is on a downward trajectory, the expectation typically leans toward an older actress. It felt like that was the main factor considered in her casting.
In an interview withVariety, the singer expressed her frustration, describing the situation as tragic:

The tragedy is that I am in my prime. I’m stronger than ever and my voice has never been better. And the industry doesn’t see that. They just see your age. So they discard you and dismiss you.
Jamie Lloyd, the director of the musical, also weighed in on how Scherzinger reacted:

I can’t say she was flattered — there are many roles Nicole always dreamt of playing, and this was not one of them.
Still, she looks super excited, ready, and determined to “go out there every single night coming for blood.” Critics have been raving about her as well, withThe Washington Postdeclaring that she’s the perfect Norma Desmond.

What Does Nicole Scherzinger Have To Say About The ModernSunset Boulevard?
Sunset Boulevardoriginally featuredGlenn Closeon Broadway back in 1994, but Lloyd’s new adaptation dives into a darker vibe. Scherzinger’s portrayal brings a raw version of the character to life, surrounded by smoke and shadows on stage. This adds a whole new level of drama, really doing justice to Norma’s story.
According to Variety, the director emphasized that his goal was to shine a light on ageism in the entertainment industry, which was a key reason for casting Scherzinger — along with the fact that he has admired her work for a long time. He wanted to illustrate how the fixation on youth can ruin a career.

Besides that, Scherzinger shared with Vogue how deeply she connected with her character:
I know what it’s like to be discarded. I connected with Norma in that way. What brought her to life was her imagination, her creativity, her dream. That is where she felt whole, in front of that camera. I connected to her feeling of loneliness. The industry is difficult like that. I have always struggled with loneliness. I have definitely struggled with abandonment. In this version, Norma is finally getting a chance to tell her story, and it’s an honest story—a human story of struggle. Who doesn’t want to be loved?
Regarding her debut on the Broadway stage, the singer didn’t shy away from admitting her nerves, fully aware of the magnitude of the moment. She mentioned that she’s honing in on Lloyd’s advice to be brave and to tune out the judgments of others.
