Since the publication of this article, Epic Games has released further details on today’s movement changes. We have updated this article to include the aforementioned details.
A newFortniteupdate was deployed earlier today, making some significant changes to the game’s movement speed following strong criticism from players. The update, which is available to download now on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Android, and PC, is expected to be the final update of the year.

When Chapter 5 Season 1 launched earlier this month, it brought some major changes to Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode. Alongside a new map, a plethora of new weapons, and a new Battle Pass, Chapter 5 also made unexpected changes to the game’s movement system. Although the actual movement speed had only been decreased by roughly 10% (according to a comparison video byVenitex), players also weren’t fond of the new animations.

Responding to fan feedback, Epic Games released astatementon the official Fortnite X (formerly known as Twitter) account. “We want to introduce visual improvements & encourage more strategic decision-making in each moment,” Epic Games said. The studio also confirmed it was “listening to [player] feedback” but hoped that players would consider giving the update some time to get used to.

A few days later, Epicannouncedit was “exploring a few options to speed things up while keeping the fresh, new animations.” It now appears as though those intended changes are now live, but will fans accept the new changes with open arms?
New Movement, Who Dis?
According to today’s patch notes, “Movement speed has been increased when crouching, and running.” Alongside the speed increase, camera movement has also been reduced, as well as a change to the view while sprinting to encourage a smoother experience. Epic also noted that movement animations have been updated to reflect the speed increase.
You can check out the footage of the new movement changes below, courtesy of Fortnite leakerShiinaBR, but it is worth noting that there are some visual bugs present that reportedly won’t appear in public lobbies. BothHYPEXand ShiinaBR have stated that the camera shaking and sliding animation seen in the clip below are both visual bugs that won’t be present in-game.

The new movement changes appear to have already divided the community. Whileone user responded with, “Omg this actually looks significantly better,“another repliedby saying, “FORTNITE MANAGED TO MAKE IT EVEN WORSE THEN IT ALREADY WAS.”
Whether you like the changes or not, they are now live in-game across all supported platforms. If you’d like to find out what else is new in today’s update, check out the patch notes on theofficial Fortnite website.
