While theTwilightnovels garnered lukewarm reviews among critics, this did little to hinder its sale, given its immense popularity among young adults. The IP’s mainstream appeal further escalated after the live-action adaptations, which, for better or worse, cemented Robert Pattinson as one of the most polarizing figures in Hollywood at the time.

When asked about his viewpoint on Stephenie Meyer’s Vampire IP, George R.R. Martin, who is no stranger to this genre, clarified why he hasn’t delved into these novels.
Twilightisn’t exactly up George R.R. Martin’s alley
Despite its immense commercial success, theTwilightbooks and its live-action adaptations weren’t unanimously celebrated by everyone, especially its lead characters, Bella and Edward. Although Vampires have enjoyed a pretty rich history in fiction, the concept of sparkly vampires didn’t sound intriguing to many, includingGeorge R.R. Martin.

Having penned his very own Vampire-centric novel before, Martin joked that high-school vampires weren’t exactly up his alley, adding (viaFeather Factor):
I have not read Twilight, no. I have my own take on vampires as I did a book called Fevre Dream in the early 80’s about that topic. And so, sparkly vampires in high school…are not up my alley (laughing). My vampires don’t sparkle.

Although his interpretation of vampires is far from his other popular works in terms of commercial success, the novel did earn critical success, earning nods for the Locus Award and World Fantasy Award upon its debut.
George R.R. Martin is vehemently pushing forFevre Dreamadaptation
George R.R. Martin has been attempting to get an adaptation ofFevre Dreamoff the ground, and interestingly, almost everything is ready to go.

Speaking of his passion project, the author detailed thatGuillermo del Torois on board to direct this adaptation despite his busy slate, and for its lead, Martin has his eyes set on Ron Perlman (viaWinter is Coming).
I’ve had meetings with Guillermo del Toro about Fevre Dream. He loves it, he says he wants to do it…but he doesn’t want to do it now. He always has this project first and that project first, and then this other project. But eventually he’ll do Fevre Dream, if he lives that long and I live that long and movies live that long, I don’t know… I think Fevre Dream would be great.

However, his passion project is yet to land a distributor, asThe Winds of Winterauthor expressed they’d need $100M to bring his vision to life. Hopefully, given the track record ofGame Of Thronesand its spin-offs, his Vampire tale might eventually get the silver screen treatment.
