Actress Monica Bellucci is currently starring inBeetlejuice Beetlejuice, a sequel to the 1988 horror-comedy filmBeetlejuice. While promoting the film, Bellucci discussed her time in theJames Bondfranchise, having appeared in 2015’sSpectre, starring Daniel Craig as the iconic British super spy. As a result, Bellucci holds the record of being the oldest actress to be cast in the role of a Bond Girl.

However, Bellucci revealed that she did not think director Sam Mendes wanted her for the part of a Bond Girl. Instead, Bellucci felt she was approached to play an entirely different character altogether. Here is what Bellucci had to say about her connection to theBondfranchise and why she should still return to it in the role she originally thought she was being offered as the franchise moves to a new era.
Monica Bellucci Initially Thought She Was Up For a DifferentJamesBondRole inSpectre
Monica Bellucciappeared as Lucia Sciarra in 2015’sSpectre, the fourth film to star Daniel Craig as Agent 007. Directed by Sam Mendes, the film was a major commercial success and made Bellucci the oldest actress to play a Bond Girl at the age of 50.
During an interview withVanity Fair, Bellucci spoke about her casting as a Bond Girl, especially considering her age and the franchise generally going for younger actresses for the female love interests of the main character. As a result, Bellucci admitted she thought she was being offered a different role.

What happened to me was so funny, because my agent called me, and told me, ‘Monica, do you want to laugh? Sam Mendes just wanted to meet you for James Bond.’ And I was 50 at the time, so I said, ‘He wants to meet me for M?’
Bellucci made the above statement, explaining that she presumed director Sam Mendes wanted to cast her in the role of Agent 007 iconic handler M, played by Judi Dench for most of Craig’s tenure as the super spy.

Monica Bellucci Could Return to theJames BondFranchise as M inBond 26
Although Bellucci made herBonddebut inSpectre, she had previously auditioned to play a Bond Girl twice in the past. Shereportedlymissed out on appearing inTomorrow Never DiesandThe World Is Not Enough. As a result, Bellucci has had a long-standing connection with the franchise.
Following Craig’s retirement from the role, a recast forthe upcomingBond 26is inevitable, with most of the supporting cast also being refreshed. Therefore, there is at least a practical chance for Bellucci to play M, a role the actress has expressed some interest in portraying.

I [would have been] so happy to play M, I have so much respect for Dame Judi Dench.
Bellucci stated the above in the same interview, implying that her age made her a natural fit for the role of M.

Furthermore, there have been rumors thatBondproducers are looking for a younger actor to play the British spy. Therefore, Bellucci, who turns 60 this year is the right age fortaking on the role of the character’s handler. The actress has a commanding screen presence and has previously played no-nonsense characters, which makes her even more suitable for the role.
