The story ofMy Happy Marriagehas captured the attention of fans for its emotional and careful character development. Directed by Takehiro Kubota, the anime adaptation accurately depicts the growth of Miyo Saimori, a young woman who starts as a traumatized character but then blooms into someone who finds her self-worth through her journey.

However, the delicate yet powerful portrayal of Miyo and her development was not just thanks to Kubota’s direction but also the advice he received from Akumi Agitogi, the author of the original light novel.
The story is a classicCinderellatale with a twist. In a world that is similar to ours but with supernatural abilities, people born without them are mistreated and shunned. The protagonist, Miyo, is one of them and was raised without love or care. However, her marriage to the “ruthless” commander, Kiyoka Kudou, is nothing like she expected. Now, she has a chance for true love and finding her own happiness, despite her past.

Miyo Saimori and theCinderellaEffect
Miyo’s story mirrors the classicCinderellastory. She was heavily abused and neglected by her family and eventually married off so that she was no longer a bother to them. However, the cold and cruel commander they thought they were marrying her off to turned out to be nothing like his reputation. Slowly, along with him, she opened herself up and found her true happiness. My Happy Marriageis a very healing anime for those who want a romance with emotional depth.
Upon being asked about her development, Takehiro Kubota reveals how the author, Akumi Agitogi, actively helped with his vision. He states on Anime News Network:

When asked if there was anything that influenced me or that I paid attention to in terms of directing, I can’t think of anything right away, but at the production level, I was careful to never make Miyo have a strong-willed expression on her face [at the beginning of the story]. This is because Miyo should be a character who is always in doubt and has difficulty making her own decisions. This is something that the original author explained to me. I see it is a way to contrast Miyo at the start to Miyo after she has grown as a person.
The subtle expressions Miyo exhibits are a great way to show the growth and contrast of her mindset as the story progresses. She eventually heals from her trauma and finds peace with Kiyoka, being a lot more open with herself and towards others. My Happy Marriagebeautifully portrays how a safe environment changes a person.

The advice given by Agitogi became the guide for the anime’s progression. Miyo’s growth was completely natural and her being restrained at the beginning is justified. However, her later confidence and no hesitation in expressing herself is an incredible contrast to her initial self. Expressions are a great tool to portray a person’s character development and Kubota nailed it with Miyo.

Her natural development and pacing were some of the most appealing points of the anime. Kubota was the right person to directMy Happy Marriagewho combined the charm of a fairytale with the sensitivity of portraying trauma into a gorgeous anime.
