Metal Gear Solid Fans Think Kojima Is A Genius For Using Lego In Development

A 20-second clip has been dug up from gaming archives and spread across social media, showing Kojima and his team at Konami developing the maps for Metal Gear Solid and figuring out the camera angles for gameplay. The hook? The creator uses Lego structures to design the basic structure of each environment and a small camera to see how it looks from a player’s perspective.

The video is broken into four panels, showing Kojima moving the camera over a Lego map, a second close-up of the camera in the creator’s hand, a third panel showing what the camera sees, and a fourth showing the final map in the game.

Kojima explained this process further a few years ago on social media, saying he drew all the maps for MGS 1 and its sequel on graph paper, including the entirety of Shadow Moses Island. However, since the map was 3D, Kojima designed each area using Lego and relied on a 3CCD camera to figure out the camera angles to scale.

Discussions surrounding the creator’s methods quickly ignited on social media after the video spread and many said it was their “favorite game dev moment”. Others thought it was an “insanely clever” design technique and stated there is now an overreliance on digital tools instead of getting up close and personal with physical models.
