Bleachhas a cast of morally grey characters and even the worst of the Shinigami end up being classed into the same realm of morality. One of these characters is Mayuri Kurotsuchi, the captain of the 12th division of the Gotei 13 and even the 2nd president of the Shinigami Research Institute. The Shinigami is the stereotype of a mad scientist, experimenting on Quincies and creating a “daughter”, Nemu. His abuse of her and the Quincies is terrifying and unforgivable.

Despite all of this, theBleachseries has chosen to depict him as a morally grey character. His narrative was brimming with darker themes, with his sadistic personality and unrelenting pursuit of scientific advancement at the cost of others’ lives. His storyline, however, was sidelined and rushed, concluding with him being just like any otherBleachcharacter.

The Wasted Potential of Mayuri’s Dark Plotline inBleach

Mayuri’s dark experiments aren’t justifiable and we know that. His defining characteristic is his thirst for knowledge that he powers through cruel experimentation. Human vivisection, unethical modifications, and casual indifference to his test subjects’ suffering are only a few of his crimes. He doesn’t see people as people and isn’t fit to be a captain with how disposable his team is to him. A prime example is Nemu Kurotsuchi, his “daughter” who is his creation that he loves to toy with, uses as a weapon and is an extension of his will. He doesn’t see her as a sentient being but another disposable tool, showing his detachment from humanity.

The biggest flaw in his storyline ishow littleBleachdelves into his experimentationsand what they imply. His creations and experiments are treated more as unsettling quirks than a direct threat to the Soul Society. Some fans call it a necessary evil for the Soul Society while some want him to be much more irredeemable as a character and find his plot a waste of potential that could’ve deepened the lore ofBleach. He could’ve tipped the scales of justice and balance of good and evil in the story. Mayurishould’ve been a more significant antagonistin the grander scheme ofBleach.

Why Reducing Mayuri to a Morally Grey Character Was a Mistake

Tite Kubohas made a mistake by reducing Mayuri Kurotsuchi to yet another morally grey character. In no television or movie series does a mad scientist like him end up becoming redeemable and justifiable. Bleach doesn’t need to have everyone be complex. While Mayuri might’ve had his own motivations, his actions need to be addressed and have consequences.

The fact that the scientist gets away scot-free from his crimes makes his storyline incredibly incomplete. Making him the quirky mad scientist of the Soul Society is an irresponsible way to deal with his character arc. His abuse of Nemu is nothing but cruel and violent. His history with Uryu makes his actions increasingly unforgivable.Bleachshould’ve explored his character better.
