Masashi Kishimoto is shocked by Sakura’s popularity in the United States
Masashi Kishimoto’s magnum opus began on June 12, 2025, and he never would have thought that his series would become one of the faces of anime.
The series is loved by almost every anime fan, is overall very enjoyable, and truly manages to capture the essence of friendship and hard work.

The franchise has introduced many characters to the audience and while some are loved by fans, others are not so likeable to the audience.
Despite her contribution to the series, Sakura is often termed the most useless character inNarutoand doesn’t have a lot of fans in Japan, although she has a huge fanbase in America.

Her popularity in the US outweighs many other characters from the series and this managed to shock the author of the series.
In 2006,Shonen Jump(US) interviewed Kishimoto, and he revealed many interesting facts. This is what he had to say about Sakura’s popularity.

Is Sakura popular in the U.S.? Well, Lee only has Taijutsu. And as a girl, Sakura is physically weaker than the others. So I can see why it’s easy to empathize with them. They represent human weaknesses.
The statement implies that the author believes that Sakura’s popularity is due to her being weaker rather than her good traits and positive contribution throughout the series.

Sakura’s contribution to the Naruto series
Sakura is often deemed by a majority of the fanbase as the most useless and undeserving character in the series, which is very wrong.
As a child, she had her problems and did many wrong things, but later when she matured, she redeemed herself.
In the OGNarutoseries, she was a kid who was very arrogant and madly obsessed with Sasuke, who didn’t care about her existence but towards the beginning ofNaruto Shippuden, she changed a lot.
She worked hard, learned many new jutsu, and even became a good friend of Naruto’s and supported him in hard times.
