The upcomingEdge of Eternities setforMagic: The Gatheringis adding the new Warp mechanic, which lets players get cards on the field quicker, so long as they don’t mind losing them temporarily.
In Magic: The Gathering, mostcreatures are summonedby paying their mana cost, but there are many ways to bypass this via card effects. There are also cards that spawn tokens en masse without the need for mana, which is a staple of swarm decks.

Final Fantasy 7’s Worst Section Can Be Used On Enemies In Magic: The Gathering
The single most frustrating section in the original Final Fantasy VII can now be unleashed as a spell in Magic: The Gathering’s crossover set.
Edge of Eternities is a new Magic: The Gathering set focused on sci-fi tropes and space travel. This will include the brand-new Warp mechanic, revealed by Wizards of the Coast during a special preview event. Warp lets cards enter the field more quickly, but with a drawback.

How Warp Works In Edge Of Eternities
The Warp keyword comes with an associated cost written next to it. If the card is in the player’s hand, they can summon it for the Warp cost instead of the mana cost, allowing the permanent to be played straight away.
The downside is that, at the end step, the card is exiled. The player can then play it for its regular cost during a future turn. This makes it similar to the Adventure mechanic from previous sets, and it givescards a lot of utilityas a result, as there are multiple ways to get them on the field at different points during the game.

It bears mentioning that Warp creatures still suffer from summoning sickness. This means that they can’t be used to get free hits, unless they also have Haste, or the player has a way of giving them that ability. Usually, players want them out due to an additional ability they have, which activates upon entering the field.
The Warp mechanic is a great addition to Magic: The Gathering, as it matches thefaster speed of playseen in recent sets, like theFinal Fantasycrossover, where players aren’t stuck with cards that they can’t use for turns at a time. Players will be able to use the power of the Warp soon, when Edge of Eternities launches on August 16, 2025.
