Nobuo Uematsu Blames Square’s Demise On The Departure Of Hironobu Sakaguchi
Uematsu claims that the departure of Hironobu Sakaguchi spelled the end of SquareSoft. Sakaguchi is thecreator of the Final Fantasy series, but he left the company after the box office failure of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
“Maybe Sakaguchi isn’t aware of this, but the situation at Square was awful after he quit. He left and the organization suddenly collapsed. I thought to myself – Oh no, I should get away from here.”

It’s strange to say the absence of Sakaguchi was the reason for SquareSoft’s decline, considering many people blame him for the company’s misfortunes. The Spirits Within debaclehas been placed firmly at his feet in the past, and many saw his own resignation as a worthy response to the failure.
Whether Sakaguchi could have kept SquareSoft afloat is unknown. He was just one man, and as time has proven, the Final Fantasy series has survived and thrived without him. SquareSoft lives on in Square Enix, and if the companies had stayed separate, then fans might have missed out onthe great games producedby the unified entity.
