Earlier this year, players were treated to one of the wildest trailers to grace screens in quite some time. After a pretty tame opening that resembled most medieval strategy games, Kingmakers stuck the23-second mark and everything changed. Out of nowhere, a huge pickup truck springs into action, running down schools of soldiers and turns the entire gameplay on its head by adding a huge twist to its 15th-century aesthetics that no one saw coming.
If you thought that trailer was wild, the small indie developer, Redemption Road Games, hasreleased another onewhere its drive-by motorbike shootings and grenade launcher action are more familiar with the GTA setting than a war-torn medieval era. In a recent interview, Kingmakers’ creators, brothers Ian, and Paul Fisch, talked about the game’s multiple endings as players take on the role of a scientist who “alters history”.

Interview: Frostpunk 2 Is Darker, Deeper And Will Hit Closer To Home
We spoke to game director Łukasz Juszczyk who was keen to share just how bleak Frostpunk 2’s world is.
Speaking withGame Informer, Ian Fisch stated how important it was for them to get Kingmakers' medieval setting right and that it wasn’t just some “generic” environment they added in. The studio also wanted to make sure it was historically accurate and included important key events for its time period. “You’re in the 15th century. You’re fighting against Henry Bolingbrook – Henry IV – and his son, Henry V.”

Paul talks about his brother Ian’s love for history and how much he enjoys “nerding it out” so fans can expect an exciting level of accuracy, which may seem quite strange given how chaotic and out of place the gameplay trailers have been. “We do try to keep this accurate lore, and then you intervene. Then the idea is that – you know – you’re altering history,” says Paul.
Throughout both trailers, players don’t get a feel for Kingmarkers' story while it remains completely focused on its wild action elements, which seems to be purposefully done as it wants to grab the players' initial attention with its full-on, eye-popping sequences. Still, it may come as a surprise that its narrative does have different outcomes.
Paul confirms that “the game has many endings,” as Ian states that they didn’t think it was a good idea to dive straight into its story lore until later. “I don’t think a trailer should start naming a bunch of proper nouns and places and characters,”
For those who can’t wait to dive into this jam-packed medieval ride, Kingmakers enters Early Access via Steam later this year.
