The newA Minecraft Movietrailer is out and fans cannot stop dissing on it. The film which stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Emma Myers among others, received flack for its CGI. Many have criticized the VFX, calling it outdated, and have spoken out against the design of the film.

However, one of the biggest criticisms the teaser received was Jack Black’s appearance as Steve. Many pointed out that he looked nothing like the beloved character and that they just asked him to put on a blue shirt and be himself. Black, however, has previously claimed to have extensively prepared himself for the role by playing the game for months.

The Jason Momoa-starrerA Minecraft Movierecently received its first teaser. Directed by Jared Hess ofNapolean Dynamitefame, the film is based on the popular video game of the same name and has an ensemble cast ofJack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement among others.

The teaser shows four humans pulled into the Overworld where they have to master the workings of the world and go on a magical quest. Joining them is Black’s Steve, a fan-favorite character who has often been regarded as the mascot ofMinecraft. Black’s appearance in the teaser was widely criticized.

However, Black had previously stated while promotingKung Fu Panda 4that he was preparing extensively forA Minecraft Movieby playing the game for months. He said toIGN,

An actor prepares, so, I have literally been exclusive to Minecraft for the last month and a half. All Minecraft, all the time. I’m in a little movie called Minecraft – I don’t want to brag, but it’s kind of a big deal. Just Stevin’ it up in the Minecraft universe.

The actor had also referred to his intense preparation for the role in an interview withGamesRadar+, joking that he would be appreciated by the Academy for his research.

The beloved character is a mascot for the game and is extremely popular. However, many fans seem to feel that he was just given a note to wear a blue shirt and be himself.

The actor has also mentioned that he used to play when his kids used to play the game just to understand their ‘language’. However, he recently got back to it to prepare for the role (via IGN).
