Wesley Snipes’Blade, released in 1998, stands as a prominent landmark in superhero cinema. It paved the path for the significant Marvel movie adaptations ofSpider-ManandX-Men.The Stephen Norrington brainchild still raises conversations among fans for its sleek action style.

While there are several notable action set pieces in the entireBladeTrilogy, nothing can top the openingBlood Ravescene from the first part. Even after 26 years, it is an excellent example of R-rated action done right.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the Wesley Snipes starrer went on to become a cult classic among fans. It excelled at portraying an entertaining blend of superhero action with R-rated horror. There could be nothing better than theBlood Ravescene to open the superhero classic.

How did Wesley Snipes’Bladestun the world with its opening sequence?
Eric Brooks aka Blade is undoubtedly one of the most badass superhero characters in the Marvel Universe. The vampire-hunting daywalker’s screen presence always makes us anticipate some of the coolest action sequences ever and theWesley Snipesfilm did not disappoint.
“What we did before is child’s play compared to what we can do now”: Wesley Snipes Was Confident His Blade Could Have Been Groundbreaking Before Marvel Cast Mahershala Ali
The openingBlood Ravesequence gives us a look into Deacon Frost’s vampiric nightclub. As Pump Panel’s techno remix ofConfusionby New Order runs in the background, blood rains from the sprinklers on the party crowd. According toEntertainment Weekly, the harrowing scene was filmed in a dilapidated meatpacking factory.
While the filming location already added an edge to the scene, cinematographer Theo Van De Sande went a step ahead and used a special anamorphic-lens camera to make the sequence look more intense. Snipes shared that even the fake blood was made with much care using a gooey corn syrup mixture. According to Snipes, some extras even“freaked out”when it was spilled on them.

Wesley Snipes also boasted a dreadful charm needed to pull off the scene. This exceptionally stylized R-rated scene inBladeis compared to the nightclub sequences inJohn Wickor the intense action scenes fromThe Raid Redemption. To date, it continues to fascinate several fans who expect such style in an upcomingBladefilm.

TheBlood Ravescene also revolutionized the R-rated superhero action in a way and did a huge job of making the film different from regular vampire flicks. The immense focus on production ensured that it looked hauntingly beautiful and entertaining to watch. On top of that, it also presented a massive challenge for any upcomingBladelive-action adaptation.
Only Chad Stahelski can save MCU’sBlade
Despite being one of the most hyped projects in the upcoming MCU slate, Destiny seems to be very cruel withMahershala Ali‘sBlade. Recently it was reported that even the director Yann Demange exited the project. To date, two directors and at least five writers left the project. But it can be a blessing in disguise as it is theperfect timefor Kevin Feige to approach theJohn Wickmastermind.
“Clearly something they are trying to force into this movie”: ‘Blade’ Update Has Fans Seething, Rumors Claim Marvel is Pushing an Agenda
Earlier this year in January,Chad Stahelskisaid on theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast that he is totally up for aBladefilm.
Of all the things out there, I would take a swing at Blade in a second, Like that’s one that gets under my skin, like ‘Ah! I’d take a swing at that one.’
The director and stunt connoisseur can be one of the best names to helm the project for his style and expertise in action. He already proved inJohn Wickthat he is a beast when it comes to designing intensely entertaining and stylized action scenes. He can carry out an even better version of the sequences we witnessed in the 1998 classic.
With the MCU slowly leaving its PG era with projects likeEcho,Deadpool & Wolverine, and evenDaredevil: Born Again, they should focus on designing better action spectacles instead of big-CGI fights.
Blade(1998) can be rented on Apple TV+.
