Harry Potter‘s wizarding world didn’t take just readers and movie fanatics on a magical mystery ride, for it also served as the sweet escape J.K. Rowling needed in her life to make it big – and to make life manageable, back then – as a single parent. But bringing that storyline from her imagination to life wasn’t as easy as it sounds.

While Rowling had everything planned in her head about how she wanted to tame Harry’s story, the actual problem was writing it all down and managing her time for it, since she was a single mother back then. In fact, the writer had to race against time to finish the first book before one grim reality of life hit her.
J.K. Rowling had to finishHarry Potter 1before starting her training as a teacher
Back whenJ.K. Rowlingoriginally got the idea to write a book that she would actually attempt to get published — she mentioned she had always been interested in writing but never really tried to get anything published beforeHarry Potter— the circumstances weren’t really entirely in her favor. To say the least, she had to ace against all odds to bring the beloved Boy Who Lived to life.
Talking toITN Archive, she shared the same while revealing how she had “always written, although this is the first thing I’ve tried to get published.” Revealing what her circumstances were back then, Rowling said: “My circumstances then were that I was a single parent, recently divorced, not working, very, very broke, and determined to finish the book.”

The reason behind her being so determined to finish the book on time was “because I was about to start training as a teacher and I knew that I would have no time, no time at all to write.” Thus, she imposed a deadline on herself for the same, as she continued to share, “So, it’s a self-imposed deadline. I just wanted to finish this book and just try and get it published.”
Thus, just to make sureHarry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stonecould actually see the light of day and be witnessed by bookworms worldwide to, perhaps, get out of being broke, Rowling was willing to defy all odds and make sure she met her self-imposed deadlines. But doing this wasn’t all that easy, as she confessed how she used to “write like fury” for hours straight.

J.K. Rowling used to sit for “two hours at a time” to “write like fury”
During the same interview, J.K. Rowling also talked about how Nicolson’s Cade in Edinburghhad a major hand inher finishing her book on time before the grim reality of life of her having to start her training as a teacher – after which she would have had pretty much little to no time to write. This is because that very cafe allowed her to sit and write for “two hours at a time.”
They used to let me sit here for two hours at a time when my daughter was asleep next to me in a pushchair. The only way that I could get her up to have her nap was to keep her moving. So, I used to walk around town, normally this part of town – because I wanted to come here – until she fell asleep. Then I’d run in here and sit here with one cold coffee for two hours at a time and write, just write like fury.

That said, “a lot of the book – in fact, the whole of chapter 10 was written in here of the first book,” as Rowling admitted. Just like that, being a single mom, the mastermind author really did give it her all to have her work turn out to be profitable for her and help make life more manageable for her.
And, of course, all of her hard work unarguably worked out in her favor, for all these hardships eventually led to so much relief that she went from beingvery, very broketo the world’s highest-paid author, asForbesnamed her back in 2008, 2017, and even 2019.
