Itadori Yuji, the protagonist ofJujutsu Kaisenhas been through some of the worst moments in the history of the series. Not only has he witnessed his friends and family die, but he also became a vessel for a mass murderer: Sukuna. The pain and suffering he has gone through in the early stages of the series makes every fan sympathize with the character.

In a quest to save the world from horrifying curses like Sukuna and Kenjaku, Itadori has been working hard to become powerful and defeat such creatures so that he can take revenge for his friends and family, and also fulfill his promise to his grandfather. But, it may not be so easy as seen in the recent chapters ofJujutsu Kaisen.
All this indicates that the series has taken a dark turn. However, a theory suggests that Itadori Yuji’s past could make his journey and the entireJujutsu Kaisenseries in general, the darkest shonen anime yet. And all this is tied to the promise he made to his grandfather.

Itadori Yuji’s Past and His Family
In chapter 143, Itadori is followed through on a dream sequence that recollects events from his early years. In this dream, he sees his parents for the first time in the whole series. Itadori’s father, Jin Itadori, is shown in the dream carrying a small Itadori and having a contentious conversation with theItadori Yuji’sgrandfather.
Jin receives a warning from Itadori’s grandfather to avoid “that woman,” and then Kaori, Yuji’s mother, makes an even more unexpected appearance. The woman has a recognizable set of scars on her head that are unquestionably the same as those on Suguru Geto’s body, indicating that Yuji’s mother was once used as a vessel by the evil sorcerer Kenjaku to conceive Itadori Yuji.

This was the first time, Itadori’s past for revealed in the series that did not just feature his grandfather. However, the revelation of his past may have made the series much more darker than it already is.
The Only Time Megumi Really Smiles in Jujutsu Kaisen Might as Well Prove Itadori Will be the One to Save Him
Itadori Yuji’s Past MakesJujutsu KaisenMuch Darker
According to theJujutsu Kaisentheory uploaded on Reddit byu/AnonymousPeerReview, Itadori’s grandfather cursed him with his final words. Possibly casting a curse, Itadori’s grandfather advised him to “save the people you can and when you die, you should be surrounded by people, don’t end up like me.”
This may have caused Itadori’s Cursed technique to develop every time one of his friends passes away, bringing him one step closer to his inevitable death. The hypothesis also states that Itadori’s mother must have strong cursed energy since Kenjaku only selects individuals with powerful cursed energy to be his vessels.

Furthermore, Sukuna reportedly stated that Itadori resembles someone from the Heien Era, implying that his ancestors might have been strong sorcerers. If the notion regarding Itadori’s past is accurate, then Itadori will eventually compete with Sukuna for the title of strongest person while simultaneously feeling completely alone since most or all of his friends have passed away and he was unable to save them.
