The term ‘veteran’ sits easily and seamlessly on the shoulders of Michael Caine. The British thespian who has made a name for himself through many memorable roles in Hollywood, is also a role model for aspiring actors when it comes to presenting a character on the big screen. Interestingly, Caine who has won the Oscar twice for Best Supporting Actor, is yet to bag the golden statuette for a lead role.

The celebrity was in with a big chance to change this fate with 2002’sThe Quiet Americanbut once again, this opportunity slipped by.The Dark Knightactor though, was more disappointed not about his loss, but about the film being snubbed for well-deserved nominations at the Academy Awards that year.
Michael Caine Had This Regret About One Of His Favorite Films
Michael Caine is a bonafide institution in acting and has showcased his skills multiple times through his films. The veteran actor’s subtle and effective approach to the craft has set the benchmark for many actors in Hollywood aspiring to make it into the big leagues.
Caine who has won twoSupporting Actor Oscarsfor his efforts inThe Cider House RulesandHannah and Her Sisters, has surprisingly not bagged the award for Best Actor till date. In 2002’sThe Quiet Americanwhich is beautiful love story set during the Vietnam War, Caine once again missed the opportunity to take home the golden statuette for the lead actor.

Ahead of the 2003Academy Awards, Caine spoke of his nomination in a role that he believed was one of his most memorable characters in any film that he had been part of. But this nod was the only one that the film got, which did not make him happy. In an interview withIGN, TheBatman Beginsstar revealed his surprise at the movie being snubbed for nominations and said,
So sometimes, in a part, everything comes together – and for me, it was the best part I ever got… I ever had… and it was the best I’d ever done with anything. So that was fine with me. I wanted to bring the picture out.

I thought we’d get a lot of nominations – like for director, writer, photography – and I was the only one who got a nomination. And that’s the big disappointment for me, of this.
The Quiet American’srejection was more significant considering the fact that its subject matter which was viewed as ‘anti-American’, was seen as controversial to warrant a release at the time, especially since the wounds of the 9/11 attacks were still fresh. It was Caine who took it upon himself to ensure that the film saw the light of day by pushing for it to be showcased at the Toronto Film Festival before its official release.

Michael Caine Reinvented Himself For This Role
1971’s critically acclaimed crime thrillerGet CarterstarringMichael Caine, is still seen as one of the best films to come out of the crime genre. Bleak, dark, and gritty, the film presented a completely new side to theZuluactor’s persona that cemented his place among cinema icons.
Director Mike Hodges expressed his surprise at Caine accepting to do a role like this especially since he was a popular lead actor at the time. Caine, who elaborated on his reasons for playing the character, was taken in by how much the role related to his tough upbringing, and wanted to showcase a different side to being a gangster (viaBamfstyle).

One of the reasons I wanted to make that picture was my background. In English movies, gangsters were either stupid or funny. I wanted to show that they’re neither.
Gangsters are not stupid, and they’re certainly not very funny… Carter is the dead-end product of my own environment, my childhood; I know him well. He is the ghost of Michael Caine.

Having grown up in England during the time that he did, the star was particular that the aesthetics and ambiance of the milieu were truthful and relatable. With Mike Hodges’ brilliant screenplay, Caine’s desire for authenticity in the character was met.
