Ever sinceAnt-Man(2015), the superhero has grown exponentially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pun intended. Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang proves that sometimes, big things come in small packages and that size does matter, after all. With three solo films to his name, it didn’t take long for Ant-Man to become one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. Of course, Paul Rudd’s undeniable charm helped a ton, too. However, theAnt-Manwe know now is far different from what it could have been.

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man

When Marvel Studios dropped the first look of the film, fans were met with an MCU they weren’t quite used to. Known for lighter depictions of the superhero universe, the production studio surprised viewers with a teaser flaunting a more solemn theme. After all, those who have seen theAnt-Manfilms know that the hero and seriousness don’t really go hand-in-hand.

Paul Rudd’sAnt-Manteaser told a different story

Let’s be honest, when you think of superheroes, you think grand. Batman, Thor, Iron Man, Superman – you know, the big leagues. Ant-Man seldom comes first to your mind.

FilmmakerZack Snyderonce compared it to the OG DC heroes, Batman and Superman, calling Ant-Man the“flavor of the week”(viaThe Daily Beast). Needless to say, people had their doubts about the size-changing supe but it’s clear thatPaul RuddandPeyton Reedchanged everyone’s minds with the film’s release.

“Unfortunately… his scenes did not make it”: One Allegedly Scrapped Storyline in Ant-Man 3 Could’ve Redeemed the Movie after Desecrating Jonathan Majors’ Kang

When the first teaser was released, though, it looked like Marvel Studios was going to bring a film that takes on a more serious route, as compared to its other projects. From Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym’s lecture to Scott Lang playing over the teaser to the somber music that accompanied it, the teaser pointed towards a much different film than what we got and love so dearly.

While there was a moment of Scott’s much-appreciated lightheartedness in the end when he asks if he can change his superhero name, the tonal drift from the teaser to the final cut still couldn’t have been predicted.

Fans did notice the stark difference between the two products. A user commented,“Whoever made this trailer had no idea what movie they were selling LOL.”Another wrote,“The trailer’s tone couldn’t have been farther away from the movie’s.”Precisely our point.

Ant-Man made the perfect sense to Paul Rudd

Superheroes are larger-than-life characters and it is often not easy for the common man to relate to them. After all, what’s relatable about a man who can shoot laser from his eyes and another who uses lighting and thunder to fight his enemies?

However, when it comes to Ant-Man, he wasn’t born with his powers and this is exactly what Rudd about his superhero. In an interview withThe Washington Post, the actor revealed how Ant-Man being a“regular person”just made sense to him and drew him to the role.

I thought if I were ever going to be cast as a superhero, something like ‘Ant-Man’ would make sense. This is not someone who’s really born with any kind of superhuman ability. He’s just a regular person.

While it didn’t win many awards, it sure did win plenty of hearts!
