Splinter Cell: Chaos Theorywas way ahead of other action-adventure games of its time. It was a multi-level game that focused on the element of stealth. Even though allSplinter Cellgames focused on stealth,Chaos Theoryintroduced significant changes to stealth mechanics.

This game set the benchmark for other stealth games. As such, many would agree thatSplinter Cell: Chaos Theoryis one the best Ubisoft title out there. However, a developer at Ubisoft believes thatFar Cry 2is better thanChaos Theory. Even thoughFar Cry 2was not as successful asChaos Theory, the lead level designer has his own reasons.
Far Cry 2was better thanSplinter Cell: Chaos Theoryaccording to Clint Hocking
Many believe thatSplinter Cell: Chaos Theoryis one of Ubisoft’s best, however, a developer at the company states otherwise. Clint Hocking, a developer who worked inChaos Theorywrote ablog postdiscussing about his work on the game. Here, he mentioned about his working hours while developing the hit game.
The lead level designer of the game wrote that while developing the game, which lasted for two years, he had to work 80 hours a week. This hectic work schedule had an impact on his mental well-being, which he realized only after the game was released.

In the blog post, Hocking added that he didn’t have any recollection of a trip where a friend came to visit him while he was working inUbisoftMontreal. Even though he reduced his working hours during his friend’s visit to spend more time with him, he remembered none of it. Hocking further added,
“There was just an empty space in my brain that had been overwritten by the stress and anxiety of Splinter Cell. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory gave me brain damage”

While the game was a hit, Hocking added that,
“I realized that while it had technically ‘worked,’ it was totally unsustainable and would not end well”

Therefore, when while working onFar Cry 2, Hocking built a team and started delegating work to others. He then added,
“Far Cry 2, in my opinion, is a better and more important game that Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory”

Even thoughFar Cry 2was not able to match the success ofChaos Theory, it was a better game for Hocking as he was able to manage his work-life balance while developing it.
