Disgraced rapper Diddy, real name Sean Combs, was arrested last month and is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. He is charged with racketeering conspiracy and s*x trafficking, including allegations of abuse involving several women.

After he was taken into custody, numerous past interviews and video clips resurfaced on the Internet. Some showed disturbing scenes, while others revealed more of Diddy’s past that could help the investigation.

He was previously known as Puff Diddy, but later changed it to P. Diddy and now, he only goes by Diddy. When Oprah tried to inquire where he got his moniker, the rapper said (viaIrish Star):
It’s a nickname somebody gave me. I’ve never told anyone that. I know you get people to tell you everything, Oprah. But I can’t look you in the eye and explain that one.

He shoved the question aside and said, “It’s just a silly name.” It was evident that he didn’t want to reveal to the world the deeper meaning and significance of his stage name. The host respected Diddy’s decision not to disclose any more of the subject, with the latter pledging, “I’ll answer every other question” except that one.
While there’s no clear explanation as to where he got the name, fans believe his changing it to P. Diddy has something to do with the infamous 1999 nightclubshooting incident. Three people were injured during the incident, and one woman who claimed to be a victim revealed Diddy was allegedly responsible for her injury.

After several weeks of trial, the rapper was found innocent of all charges related to the shooting. In 2001, he announced that he would now go by the name P. Diddy. Despite being a free man, he still decided to alter his stage name to protect his image.

Diddy Recalled His Childhood Nickname
In his other interviews, he opened up about his many nicknames. He toldJET Magazinein 1998 that he had a temper when he was younger and his friend started calling him “Puffy”. While speaking withCNN, he shared:
I’ve had different name changes because I only just grew up in a neighborhood where everybody had nicknames. My first nickname was Puffy…

At the time, the rapper could no longer remember which of his names came first because he had quite a lot.
