Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood Waris a masterpiece in the making. From the manga that took the longest time to be made to the anime that started airing a decade after the original anime’s end; the series has been through a lot. While criticism of Tite Kubo’s work may not end, praise quickly follows in its path as well.

There may have been ups and downs with regard to the series’ success, pacing, and story; but the final outcome through the Thousand-Year Blood War was one that fans can unanimously agree about. It is a spectacle to watch with a story worth endless compliments. Tite Kubo may not have gotten to finish the series in a way he wanted but Studio Pierrot is trying its level best to do the current arc justice.

During an interview (viaX) Tomohisa Taguchi talked about getting on boardBleach: Thousand-Year Blood Waras a director. In it, he also went into detail about how his love for the cinema and filmmaking came into being. Movies such asGodzillacaught his eye early on.
I like special effects movies, Godzilla, and monster movies, so I started watching movies in high school and college. From quite old movies, I saw the works of Jean-Luc Godard and French Nouvelle Vague, and I was shocked that there was such a movie. I thought, I want to pursue this kind of expression, and; I want to do it, and; I want to use the camera myself.’

Action-oriented movies became an entry way to films for him and very quickly he found himself passionate about not being in front of the camera but behind it. While monster movies became a big inspiration for him, Jean-Luc Godard’s films turned it all around.Godzillaignited his passion for movies and thePierrot le Foudirector became the trigger.

Seeing the French New Wave, he was overwhelmed with inspiration, combining his likes for the different kinds of movies and wanting to pick the camera up for himself.
Tomohisa Taguchi Found His Path in Life
Once Tomohisa Taguchi found his calling, he knew it had to be set in stone as well. Seeing the need for an assistant director in an animation company, he took his first step. From then on it was an uphill journey where he found himself immersed in the anime industry, surprisingly not as a director.
An animation company was looking for an assistant director, so I thought, ‘I can direct videos,’ and that’s how I started working in the anime industry. At first, I decided to do the production, but after a while, I met a certain director, and from there I started directing animation.

He found himself liking the production side of things as compared to the directing. However, as time progressed, so did his affinity. After getting offered to become the director for an anime, Taguchi quickly learned that his calling lay with direction and not production alone.
