Mastermind Taylor Sheridan has worked with a lot of other master brains throughout his decades-spanning career, with genius filmmakers like David Mackenzie being one of them. This pair collaborated on the former’s critically commended masterpiece from 2016,Hell or High Water, which easily became a box office blockbuster at a $37 million worldwide gross with Mackenzie’s helming.

Needless to say, Mackenzie has also displayed his brilliant filmmaking chops in other pieces spread across various genres, like 2013’s critically acclaimed crime-thrillerStarred Up, for one to count. However, when it comes to working on the superhero genre in particular, the director holds the harshest response even at the thought of directing a Marvel movie under Kevin Feige’s supervision.
David Mackenzie Has No Interest in Working on Superhero Movies
DirectorDavid Mackenziehas led a fairly promising career in the entertainment industry, having tested his skills across multiple genres including action/war, romantic/sci-fi, and even crime/thrillers. However, there is one genre that he would quite literally never want to even visit: The superhero genre — be it from the MCU or the DCU.
During an interview withThe Guardian, he presented his honest opinion on the same when asked what his reaction would be if he gets called to direct a film for the MCU since they are renowned for opting for indie directors. Candidly responding, Mackenzie said:

I can’t f—ing bear superheroes, so I won’t be doing one of those.
As surprising as that may be to hear to all those fans out there, that isn’t all the director has to say about this respective genre.

Beef With Taylor Sheridan is Not the Only Reason, Studio Rejecting Kevin Costner’s 1 Request With Yellowstone Script Was the Final Nail in the Coffin
While completely slamming even the idea of working underKevin Feigeon a superhero movie for the MCU, theSpreaddirector also went on to say:
I look forward to the day when the general public get tired of these things – I’ve been tired of them for a long time.

Although this criticism is unarguably incredibly harsh, it sounds like the time has come that viewers are starting to get bored of all these movies and are facing superhero fatigue, considering the downfall of all those super-serum movies as of late (even thoughthe Russo Brothers tend to argue otherwise).
One Misogynistic Yellowstone Scene is a Warning Taylor Sheridan May Doom the Show by Repeating a Heinous Game of Thrones Mistake
But while the superhero genre could seemingly never win his approval, filmmaker Sheridan seems to have done that quite easily.
David Mackenzie was Immensely Impressed with Taylor Sheridan’s Writing
As brutal of a critic as Mackenzie sounds, he is also a very evaluative person as a director and admits that there is hardly a script that appeases him in its first draft. However, Hollywood geniusTaylor Sheridanseems to have left him immensely impressed and stunned with him through only his first script forHell or High Water.
During the same interview with The Guardian, this mastermind filmmaker then continued to talk about the same and explained all the while how it was a“love at first sight experience”for him, saying:

I very rarely read a script that I don’t feel I want to change a lot.
It seems like this love-at-first-sight situation perfectly helped Mackenzie while helming the movie as well, considering how this movie was not only acclaimed critically but was also a box office smash hit, bringing in a whopping $37 million globally on its budget of $12 million (as perThe Numbers).
