HBO’sThe Last of Usis one of those rare video game adaptations that worked almost as well as its source material. Based on the incredible games by Naughty Dog, the show starred Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as the leads, going on a cross-country adventure in a zombie-infested apocalyptic world.

Anna Torv’s Tess is one of the most memorable among the many guest stars who appear in each episode. Her relationship with Joel at the beginning of the series and her ultimate sacrifice are endearing and heartbreaking. However, she is involved in one of the most disgusting scenes in the show, but thankfully, Torv did not have to perform it for real.
Anna Torv thought her ‘kiss’ scene inThe Last of Uswas going to be much more gross
The Last of Ushas many harrowing deaths in each episode. The show begins withPedro Pascal’sJoel going through a personal tragedy at the dawn of the apocalypse and as the journey goes on, more deaths occur. In the second episode of the show, a fan-favorite character, Tess, breathes her last after sacrificing herself for the cure.

While the sacrifice bit is extremely emotional, her final scene before being infected is not easy on the eyes. As Joel and Ellie escape a horde of infected running towards them at the Fireflies’ headquarters, Tess decides to sacrifice herself to save them, giving the duo a headstart. The episode ends with an infectious kiss between a Clicker and Tess.
Anna Torv, who played Tess, revealed that much of the disgusting parts of the kiss were done in post and she did not have to worry about it as much. She said toLooper,

No, that was all done in post, thank God! They kept trying to explain what it was going to be and I wasn’t quite sure. [With] that whole scene, too, when I read it, I thought it was going to be a very different thing. I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s gross!’
The scene includes a strand of the Cordyceps fungus emerging from an infected’s mouth which latches onto Tess’.

Anna Torv spoke about Tess’ character arc in her two-episode stint onThe Last of Us
Anna Torv has been a part of hit shows likeFringeandMindhunter, where her character received enough time and episodes to have a complete journey. With Tess, however, Torv had to portray the character’s hopelessness after the apocalypse, the stuff they had to do to survive in the world, and her gradual change into trusting Ellie in just two episodes.

Torv spoke about the character’s journey in the show and how she begins to trustBella Ramsey’s Elliein a pivotal moment in the series. She said toTV Guide,
I think that by the end, it’s like God, everybody wants hope. I think that’s kind of the thing that Joel and Tess have lost. Tess definitely softens a little bit more towards Ellie…She gets bit and Ellie does too, and she looks and she goes, oh my God, this is real. This is what people keep talking about, the Fireflies — surely there has to be a cure, surely there has to be an antidote.

Tess becomes a catalyst to the journey that both Joel and Ellie have throughout the series and with her sacrifice, she finally gets her freedom.
The Last of Usis streaming on Max.
