Steven Spielberg’s works speak for themselves. Over the years, he has been labeled as one of the most respected directors of all time, and his pure talent can be credited for this. However, even the mightiest have their bad days, and the director has certainly released some films that did not work. One of the best examples of such a film would be his 1991 film,Hook.

A lot was going on during the production of the movie. The film famously had some very difficult times when it came to its cast, budget, and the director himself. Amid this, Spielberg and Julia Roberts seemed to have some serious bad blood. The actress was going through a serious breakup, and there were a lot of eyes on the film. This made her performance quite a tedious one for the director.
During an interview, he talked about the regrets he had when it came to the movie, and interestingly enough, he did not put the blame on Roberts.

Steven Spielberg Does Not LikeHook
When it comes to the art that one creates, it is very important to recognize when they have created something good, and when they haven’t. Admitting that you did not make a masterpiece is almost as important as admitting when you do.
It would seem thatSteven Spielbergperfectly understands such sentiments, as he has been publically critical (viaFarout) about films that he now knows weren’t as good as he thought them to be at the moment, specifically when it comes to the 1991 film,Hook.

I so don’t like that movie.
Steven Spielberg Took a Big Gamble Before Making 7x Oscar Winning Movie, Waited 11 Years Because He Was Not Mature Enough
Spielberg once made an appearance on theKermode & Mayo Film Review, where he talked about the film in the most candid ways possible. He revealed that even though he was not a fan of the movie and avoided watching it at all costs, he was still curious about it, given how many years had passed.
I want to see Hook again. I still don’t like that movie. I’m hoping someday I’ll see it again and perhaps like some of it.

He elaborated on the feeling, revealing that he wants to watch the movie again; simply because he wants to convince himself that it is not as bad as he remembers it to be. It would seem that Spielberg wants to watch the movie so that he can find something salvageable and good about it so that he can put his mind at ease.
Steven Spielberg Knows Why Hook Failed
Steven Spielbergonce revealed exactly what he thought to be the downfall of the movie during an interview with theEmpire(viaDen of Geeks). He could have easily blamed many aspects; production, cast, crew, circumstances, and even Julia Roberts. However, he decided to take responsibility and chalked up the film’s failure to his negligence.
I’ve made a few films like that. I felt like a fish out of water making Hook.

The filmmaker revealed that he was not very confident in the script of the movie, as a whole. While he adored the beginning and the end, the middle part of the film was lost to him. Despite this, he decided to continue what he was doing, because he was afraid.

I didn’t have confidence in the script. I had confidence in the first act, and I had confidence in the epilogue. I didn’t have confidence in the body of it. I didn’t quite know what I was doing, and I tried to paint over my insecurity with production value, the more insecure I felt about it, the bigger and more colourful the sets became.
He understood that he was out of his depths when he was making the movie. Despite this, he kept going and going, trying to cover his insecurities in technicolor. However, they were still very visible, according to Spielberg, and that was what doomed his movie.
Hookis available for streaming on AMC+.
