As soon as it was revealed that there was a director’s cut ofJustice League, fans of the DCEU descended into a frenzy with an online campaign that eventually saw the release of the film, much to the delight of the audiences. However, this was not the only sought-after director’s cut in the DCEU.

WhileZack Snyder’s Justice Leaguereceived a massive amount of support online, even before it was officially announced it would see the light of day. David Ayer’sSuicide Squadwas similarly graced with a ton of fan support, leading to another campaign that favoured the release of an ‘Ayer Cut’, similar to what was done withZack Snyder’s Justice League.

However, it seems an Ayer Cut might not be in the stars for DCEU fans
Despite all the support that Ayer Cut has received, it seems that with the end of the DCEU, the director is no longer interested in releasing his cut of the film.Suicide Squadwas one of the most critically panned films of the DCEU, which was attributed to studio meddling, as was the case with other films in the DCEU. When asked if he would be open to doing additional photography for the release of his cut of the film, the director replied:
“No. I can’t put any more of my soul into that film. I’m done.”

Seeing that the DCEU has finally come to a close with the release ofAquaman and the Lost Kingdom, it seems doubtful that the film would even interest fans anymore. If the film is to be released, then it must do so before the beginning of James Gunn’s DCU, given that the film, if released, would be of no consequence other than making a quick buck, which might be too late for fans to be interested in.

Does the Ayer Cut even stand a chance?
The theatrical cut ofSuicide Squadwas released in theatres in 2016 and was panned by critics for its numerous issues, mostly attributed to corporate meddling by WB. Following the Snyder Cut campaign for theJustice League, an Ayer Cut was also demanded by fans but is yet to see the light of day. However, since then, a lot of things have happened to the Suicide Squad and the DCEU, that puts the Ayer Cut in a weird place.
To begin with, the next installment in the DCEU that followed the franchise wasThe Suicide Squad, directed by James Gunn, which was much more critically praised and beloved by fans. Following this, the DCEU also came to a close last year with the release ofAquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which was the final installment in the DCEU. Now, under the supervision of James Gunn, the DCU will begin its work in a new direction, focusing on building a superhero universe distinct from the DCEU.

This begs the question: What merit will WB see in releasing the Ayer Cut? There are already calls on the internet to restore the Snyder-Verse, which would include the unfinished works of Zack Snyder in the DCEU, WB is already haunted by Snyder’s vision of a shared DC Universe. It makes complete sense for the company to jettison the project entirely, so that the focus is on the new DCU, rather than the DCEU, which was largely a bad investment for the company.
