Guillermo del Toro, as a filmmaker, understands horror and fantasy, unlike any other director in Hollywood. So it stands to reason that the horror icon would have been blown away by the work that was done on the firstBladefilm.

Guillermo del Toro talked about being completely taken aback by how awesome the film was, and in doing so also revealed how he did the sequel a little differently. Given that del Toro has made a name for himself in the science fiction-fantasy side of Hollywood, his take onBlade IIwas bound to be a treat for fans and audiences alike.
Guillermo del Toro loved the James Cameron nature ofBlade
Guillermo del Tororevealed that he was verytaken by the night-clubJames Cameron aesthetic of the film, which took urban fantasy into a new direction, while also proving that Marvel characters could helm their own films. He said:
When I saw the first movie, and I saw the first thirty minutes of it, I crapped in my pants. I was like ‘What the hell is this?’, I thought it was amazing. But it was very James Cameron type of sensibility. Blue, brush teal, neon, black leather, all of that, applied to the world of Vampires.Very urban, very hip, very techno, very nightclub life. Beautiful. Very, very, very vibrant. But I didn’t want to do any of this in the second one. That’s why I was interested in doing a different type of action, that was more Japanese anime.

Guillermo del Toro is part of a new line of Hollywood directors that have taken inspiration for their work from anime. Nowhere is it more clear than in del Toro’s 2013 offering,Pacific Rim, but there are clear and nuanced shades of it inBlade IIas well. Other directors like Michael B. Jordan have also employedanime as inspirationin their films, such asCreed III.
Guillermo del Toro would be the perfect pick to direct Doctor Strange III
Benedict Cumberbatch hadindicated earlier this monththat there might be a third Doctor Strange film. Given that del Toro was interested in making a film based on the character in the2000s, with Neil Gaiman set to write it, the director could seize the opportunity to do the same here. With a competent writer, not only would del Toro be able to use the character of Clea in the story (who had already been set up inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), but he could also bring one of Strange’s most celebrated villains to the screen: Nightmare.
“Dear lord, what a horrible story”: Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar Winner Was His Revenge Against a Classic Monster Movie That Broke His Heart
It is always possible that the rumors suggesting that films betweenDoomsdayandSecret Warsare going to take place in Battleworld, Doctor Strange could come into his role as an enforcer of Doom, which could be the plot ofDoctor Strange 3, which has been rumored to get a release between 2026 and 2027. Given that Cumberbatch has confirmed that he would not be a part ofDoomsday, it makes little sense to reintroduce him inSecret Warswithout fleshing out his story a little more.
Avengers: Doomsdayhits theatres on June 01, 2025.
Avengers: Secret Warshits theatres on June 13, 2025.
