If you’re going to defeat any of the Night Lords inElden Ring Nightreign, creating a strong build before you reach day 3 is a must. This can be done by finding stronger weapons, equipping armaments with powerful buffs, and achieving a high character level.
One of the most important items to bring with you into day 3 is Somber Smithing Stones. The game’s strongest weapons, usually ones with magic skills and higher rarity, require these rare stones to upgrade.

Elden Ring: Tarnshed Edition Content Confirmed For Other Platforms As DLC
Prepare for more Elden Ring content coming your way soon.
Knowing where to find these upgrade materials can significantly increase your chances of completing an expedition. Learn how to find Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring Nightreign with this guide.
How to Get Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring Nightreign
Elden Ring Nightreign players can find Somber Smithing Stones in caves and mines.
Out of all the places to explore on the map, caves and mines offer a guaranteed drop for Somber Smithing Stones. All you need to do is defeat the Great Enemy at the end of the dungeon, and you’ll be rewarded with this upgraded material.

Considering this drop is from a boss (Great Enemy), rather than being found in a chest, each of your party members can grab a Somber Smithing Stone. This makes the trip well worth the effortfor the entire team.
Keep in mind that there are chances for Somber Smithing Stones to drop outside of these locations. However, it is extremely rare and has only happened to me once out of 30 expeditions.

Elden Ring Nightreign’s Director Was Told He “Shouldn’t Hold Back” When Designing The Game
Elden Ring Nightreign’s director explains how he was set loose to create the multiplayer co-op souls game of his dreams.
The good news about caves and mines is thattheir locations remain stagnant and don’t change between runs. This allows players to easily add these locations to their regular map route, similar to churches, Evergoals, etc.

While some high-tier weapons can’t be upgraded at all, many of them can. The game will tell you if a weaponcan’tbe upgraded at the bottom of the screen when interacting with an anvil.
Luckily, those thatcanbe upgraded only require one Somber Smithing Stone. This is great for players only wielding one weapon, as they’ll only have to visit one cave or mine to fully upgrade their Armament.

However, if you’re a dual wielder like me, you’ll have to visit two different caves on your expedition. This way, you’ll earn two Somber Smithing Stones and can fully upgrade both Armaments.
How to Get Standard Smithing Stones
Finding standard Smithing Stones is much easier, and there’s a reason for that. Smithing Stones can only be used toupgrade regular weapons, ones that don’t have any magic attached to them, strong Ashes of Wars, etc.
Still, some “regular” weapons are quite powerful and are worth upgrading if you’re able to’t find any better options. You never know how a run will end up, so it’s good to learn where to find Smithing Stones.
Players can purchase Smithing Stones from merchantsfound on expeditions. While not all merchants sell Smithing Stones on every expedition, the chances are pretty high.
Additionally, players can find Smithing Stones as random drops while playing through days 1 and 2. They can be found in chests and dropped by bosses.
Lastly, the most reliable method to obtain a Smithing Stone is bypurchasing one from the merchanton Day 3, right before entering theNight Lord arena. This merchant always has multiple Smithing Stones available in his inventory.
