Will George R.R. Martin Ever Finish WritingThe Winds of Winter?
The Winds of Winteris the eagerly awaited sixth novel in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy seriesA Song of Ice and Fire. It has been over a decade since he began working on it in 2012. Since then, Martin has openly discussed the various challenges he’s faced in bringing the book to completion. Talking about the book on theBangcastpodcast, he said,
I have like 1,100 pages written, but I still have hundreds more pages to go. It’s a big mother of a book for whatever reason. Maybe I should’ve started writing smaller books when I began this, but it’s tough.
Most recently, George R.R. Martin visitedThe Oxford Writers’ Housefor a talk earlier this month. During his appearance, he also touched on the progress ofThe Winds of Winter, sharing insights into his efforts to finish the book. He said,
That’s something that I would envy, but I’ve never done that and I never could’ve done it, even now. Believe it or not, I am not taking all that time to write Winds of Winter just because I think I’m Gene Wolfe now. I would’ve loved to have it finished years ago, but yeah, that’s the big thing I think I would change.
The Winds of Winteris set to be the longest book in theA Song of Ice and Fireseries, so it’s no surprise it’s taking its sweet time.

Martin noted how writer Gene Wolfe managed to spend six years on his novel before publication, thanks to a steady gig as an editor that kept his family afloat while he wrote on weekends. For Martin and other full-time writers, however, this luxury isn’t on the table, crafting epic tales is their bread and butter, making long, uninterrupted writing stretches a bit of a fantasy in itself.
