Baldur’s Gate 3is a 2023 RPG game developed by Larian Studios, set in the incredible Dungeons and Dragons universe. In this game, players engage in turn-based combat, explore a richly detailed world, and make impactful choices that shape the overall narrative, all while unraveling a complex story.
The game features turns of captivating characters, but Astarion, the mischievous vampire spawn, has quickly become a fan-favorite for his engaging narrative, exceptional voice acting, and sassy flair. However, Astarion has one of the worst endings in the game, which, according to the developers, delivers a“really powerful”message.
Astarion’s Evil Ending Delivers a Message That We Can’t Ignore
Allowing Astarion to finish the ritual in Cazador’s place allows him to become an Ascendant Vampire, which is stronger than both a Vampire Spawn and a real Vampire. This ending is considered to be one of the worst endings for Astarion’s character.
Back in December 2023, Larian’s lead developers, Swen Vincke, Adam Smith, and Chrystal Ding,touched upon the various controversial endingsto characters inBaldur’s Gate 3. While talking about Astarion’s evil ending and tragic fate, Smith believed that his actions were a result of his fears.
So with Astarion, his evil ending is actually him…much of what he does is out of fear. And as a player, you’re able to say to him, “You’re right to be afraid.” And that sends him to a really horrible place, and that I think is really powerful.
There’s no doubt that Astarion has one of the best character developments inBaldur’s Gate 3. He goes from a simple man who doesn’t care about anyone but himself to having a sympathetic and caring nature for others. However, everything changes once he ascends, as he loses all his character development and becomes how he was when players first come across him, but with a hunger for power and a controlling demeanor.

Much like Cazador, Astrion, after ascending, also grows a lust and hunger for power, unlike his Spawn self. Ascended Astarion believes that freedom can only be obtained with domination over everything else. He basically becomes Cazador, the person who he despises the most.
Astarion goes after Ascension because he believes it will make him safe. However, Ascension ends up feeding into his fears rather than giving him the strength to go and heal from his generation’s trauma. It’s really a crucial message for us as players by the developers to never feed into our fears and take a leap of faith to grow past them. If we don’t rise above the things that fear us, we’ll eventually head onto a dark path and lose the chance to redeem ourselves.
Neil Newborn Helped Astarion Become One of the Best Gaming Characters
In a title full to the brim with complex characters, such asBaldur’s Gate 3, it takes a specific character to stand out. However,Neil Newborn has managed it with his role as Astarion. He was aptly rewarded for his efforts, taking multiple awards for his work, including the prize for Best Performance at last year’s The Game Awards.

That’s not all!Astarion has even managed to get a spoton the gaming’s most iconic characters this year, right between Cloud Strife and Kiryu Kazama. That’s surely some incredible company the character has found himself, and it’s an amazing feat, considering the game is still less than a year old. Astrion is undoubtedly one of the most iconic characters, and Larian has to thank Newborn for elevating the character to that level.
