Ikkaku Madarame is everyone’s favorite cocky character inBleach. He might live and die for battles, much like his captain, Kenpachi Zaraki, but Tite Kubo has given the character enough development for fans to love him. Additionally, the running gag about his bald head can make anyone stifle their laughter.
While Ikkaku is admittedly powerful, he is not a division captain. A common allegation against Tite Kubo is that he never let Ikkaku grow. However, this blaming game has to stop as Ikkaku is a top-notch character despite his shortcomings.
Ikkaku’s Zanpakuto is Broken Beyond Repair in Tite Kubo’sBleach
Ikkaku’sBankai is unusualbecause aside from a power increase, it does not offer any special abilities. His Bankai gets increasingly powerful as the battle drags on, and his Reiatsu also rises. Ikkaku has also stated that his Zanpakuto is lazy during battles and needs to be woken up by either causing or receiving injuries.

Ikkaku used Bankai in his battle against Edrad during the Arrancar arc. However, when the two collided in a powerful explosion, Ikkaku’s Bankai broke into pieces. Ever since then, his Bankai did not make an appearance in the series. Mayuri later explained that Ikkau’s Bankai has become considerably weaker after Edrad destroyed it. Akon managed to repair it to its original shape, but its power has never been the same.
Fans speculate that Ikkaku might not have trained enough to restore his Zanpakuto, but no matter how much you train, there’s a limit to everything. At the end of the day, Ikkaku is superb character and he doesn’t need to be the strongest to prove it.Tite Kubohas fleshed out the character to the best of his ability.
Ikkaku Refused to Become a Division Captain Out of His Loyalty to Kenpachi Zaraki
In the Soul Society, a member of the Gotei 13 can become a Captain if they have unlocked their Bankai. However, Ikkaku chose to remain under Kenpachi Zaraki which made fans question if Tite Kubo is just not ready to give Ikkaku more development. But the reality is the complete opposite.

ThroughoutBleach, Tite Kubo has made it clear that Ikaku respects and admires Kenpachi Zaraki, his Division Captain. Thus,he decided to hide his Bankaiso that he wouldn’t have to change divisions. He is the former Third Seat in the 11th Division who later became the lieutenant. He refused to be the captain of the Third, Fifth, or Ninth Divisions after Aizen and his cohorts defected from the Soul Society.
Thus, Ikkaku has a character who has always valued his loyalty and respect for Kenpachi, out of which he denied becoming a Captain. He even wished to remain under Zaraki’s command till death claimed him. He even refused to use his Bankai against the Arrancar Che Neng Poww due to which he lost the battle badly.
