The marquee launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2 is, without a doubt,Mario Kart World.
This marks the second straight console launch that a Mario Kart title has helped pave the way for Nintendo. Of course, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wasn’t alone onNintendo Switch. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildwas a pretty big deal, too.

10 Upcoming Switch 2 Games That Justify Pre-Ordering
Nintendo fans have much to be excited about with the Switch 2 on the horizon. Here are some of the games that justify pre-orders.
With the Switch 2’s launch, though, there’s no Super Mario, Zelda, or Metroid title alongside Mario Kart World. Sure, a new Donkey Kong game is coming soon, but on launch day, it’s full steam ahead for Mario Kart World.

A recentdeveloper interviewdelves into Nintendo’s thought process behind Mario Kart World. One topic that came up was the name: Why is this not Mario Kart 9?
Nintendo Says That Mario Kart World Takes The Series To A New Level
To be fair, Nintendo didn’t start numbering theMario Kart gamesuntil 2011’s Mario Kart 7 for theNintendo 3DS, though that was indeed the seventh mainline release in the franchise. That trend continued with 2014’s Mario Kart 8 and the Nintendo Switch follow-up,Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Many expected the eventual Switch 2 Mario Kart title to be dubbed “Mario Kart 9,” but that’s not the case. Kosuke Yabuki, producer for Mario Kart World, explains why.
If the idea had just been to add more courses, then I think we would’ve called it Mario Kart 9.

But, that wasn’t our approach this time. We wanted to take the series to the next level. So, we decided to drop the numbering this time and go with a completely new title, Mario Kart World. So, we’d already added “MARIO KART WORLD” to the concept art from the early stages of development.
Originally Designed For The First Switch, Mario Kart World Needed Switch 2 Hardware To Function
Mario Kart World would not be the game it is without the Switch 2’s hardware boost
Yabuki said the team wanted to utilize the idea of an interconnected world thanks to the updated hardware inside the Switch 2. It allows players to “seamlessly transition between courses and realize a single, vast world,” which is what they wanted to create in Mario Kart World.

We’ll see if it is worth the wait, and the money, on June 5th.
