In the world of X-Men, Wolverine might be the top dog, but other characters often played second fiddle—until Beau DeMayo came along. Under the Marvel Animation banner, he breathed new life into theX-Menfranchise withX-Men ’97, pulling lesser-known heroes out of the shadows and giving them their moment in the spotlight.

But just as the show was gearing up for its big debut earlier this year, the creator-head writer was shown the door just days before the premiere. Fast forward to today, and DeMayo is finally speaking up. In a recent social media post, he shed light on why Marvel allegedly wiped his name off the credits for Season 2. According to him, it all started with Pride Month fan art he shared on Instagram.
But some Marvel fans won’t be buying into DeMayo’s claim.
X-Men ‘97: Marvel Fans Are Skeptical About Beau DeMayo’s Firing Story?
X-Men‘97creator & head writerBeau DeMayo’s exit just before the show’s premiere has left fans and industry insiders in a tizzy, with speculation running wild. But the drama does not end there. Now, DeMayo is spilling the beans on why his name was pulled from the Season 2 credits, leaving fans to wonder what really went down behind the scenes.
“All these announcements today align with my original vision”: All Hopes for X-Men ‘97 Season 2 Aren’t Lost After Beau DeMayo Makes a Promising Statement Despite Mysterious Exit from Show
In a recent social media post, DeMayo let the cat out of the bag, hinting at the reason behind his controversial firing. On X, he shared his gratitude and the bittersweet news:
Firstly, I’m so grateful to have worked on#XMen97, collaborating with some amazingly talented folks. Creating this revival was a dream come true and the support fans have shown is so touching. However, I felt it pressing for me to speak up in the wake of leaving the show…pic.twitter.com/kbOTL3IQJj

DeMayo then revealed a screenshot of his Instagram post from June 4, which celebrated Pride Month with some vibrant fan art. This second post on X laid out his grievances. But wait, there’s more. DeMayo claims that this is just the tip of the iceberg. He hinted at a“troubling pattern”he endured while working onX-Men ’97andBlade.
Above is#XMenfan-art I posted on Instagram for Gay Pride in June. On June 13,#Marvelsent a letter notifying me that they’d stripped my Season 2 credits due to the post. Sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while on working on#XMen97and#Blade.

It seems that the not-so-harmless art he posted in June ruffled some feathers over at Marvel headquarters. However, not everyone is able to digest DeMayo’s story. Fans argue that since he was fired in March and his Pride Month post didn’t go up until June, drawing a direct line between the two events might be stretching the truth a bit thin.
Let’s see what fans have to say—because where there’s smoke, there’s usually some fiery feedback:

This kinda seems like bullshit considering it was revealed he was fired in March and this was posted in Junehttps://t.co/fAyirktqLqpic.twitter.com/ORlD8stPS7
for all the secrecy around why he was fired I can’t believe it was just over gay fanart, and the fact that he’s saying this after he’s been called out for being shitty in the past and that awful “bible” he wrote? it all just feels shady

He’s saying they further decided to take his credit for s2 away cus of thisBut it seems, not impossible, but pretty sus
The June art was why they stripped his s2 credit. However, it’s still incredibly sus that he still won’t admit why he was fired
And while some fans cried foul over DeMayo’s assertions, others couldn’t question the timeline or the motives behind the credit removal.

But wait, Marvel didn’t waste any time hitting back. According toThe Hollywood Reporter, the studio’s response came like a thunderclap, shedding light on the mystery of DeMayo’s exit. Marvel’s statement pointed to an internal investigation that uncovered “egregious” issues, leading to DeMayo’s swift dismissal.

Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.
