Game of Thronesis a brilliant retelling of George R.R. Martin’s legacy work,A Song of Ice and Fire. But HBO’s near-perfect piece of television suffered the disadvantage of plowing through seasons faster than Martin could say “Winds of Winter” (pun intended). The fantasy epic then learned the hard way what it meant to play god with the characters created by the author from his own subliminal imagination.

Ironically, the failures and shortcomings ofGame of Thronesnow allow George R.R. Martin to bypass the potential errors in his story completely. Instead, the author can use the HBO series as a lesson in whatnotto do while composing the final two novels in hisA Song of Ice and Fireseries – one of them being the controversially crafted ending of Daenerys Targaryen’s story.
Game of ThronesFinds Familiarity inDune
Game of Throneswas very cut and dry about where it stood with Daenerys Targaryen since the very beginning – a displaced, unfortunate, and powerless girl destined to be a queen. With the birth of the three dragons and her rise as Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the story gave Daenerys a shot at claiming her robbed destiny. However, her arc in Season 3 brought on some unforeseen troubles down the road.
While Daenerys Targaryen made her way across Slaver’s Bay conquering cities, armies, and oppressors, her self-appointed mission as the breaker of chains made her into the quintessential white savior. The mistake in all of this, however, was to end the third season by literally elevating her into a messianic figure. As the people of Yunkai hoisted her up over their heads while chanting Mhysa loud enough to mimic a dragon’s roar, the audience is left both transfixed and terrified of the implications of an act so extreme.

Why ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ is More Important Than ‘House of the Dragon’ That Most ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Don’t Know About – Explained
While the parallels might not be immediately apparent, Daenerys Targaryen’s story exactly mirrors that of Paul Atreides inDune. Both born into nobility and robbed of their rightful destiny, the displaced heroes become the product of a world-ending prophecy and raise armies to reclaim what was theirs to begin with. Their rise as a messiah in a foreign land and eventually turning evil in the end, resulting in untold death and destruction, links the Mhysa of House Targaryen to the Mahdi of House Atreides, and as such, the tale of their eventual downfallshould have been founded on somewhat similar grounds.
Daenerys Targaryen Gets a Shot at Redemption ThroughDune
Denis Villeneuve‘sDune: Part Twodid a brilliant job of executing the prophecy of Lisan al-Gaib. The destiny that Paul Atreides tried so hard to run from finally caught up to him and after being backed into a corner, the boy-king began to acknowledge his role in the coming war. Villeneuve took two whole movies to trace the arc of justifying Paul’s acceptance of the prophecy.
The prophesied hero believing in his own destiny as the Lisan al-Gaib plays into the notion of Daenerys Targaryen believing herself to be the prophesied Prince That Was Promised in Aegon’s dream about “A Song of Ice and Fire”.Game of Thronesstarted down that road when the show’s Season 3 ended with its Mhysa moment (again, a shot that mirrors a scene inDune: Part Two) and could have kept playing into that trope of battling morality and inescapable destiny as Villeneuve did withDune.

Instead,Game of Throneskeeps rationalizing Daenerys’ arc throughout its eight seasons as the actions of a just and noble queen – right until the end. The sudden turn in her identity as she transmutes from being the formidable Targaryen princess to the Mad Queen burning down King’s Landing is a shock to the senses… unlike the transmutation of Paul Atreides into Lisan al-Gaib.
“My main focus has got to be the books”: Game of Thrones Author George R.R. Martin Needs to Believe His Own Reason for Preferring the Books Over the Show
George R.R. Martinneeds to take notes from Denis Villeneuve’s retelling of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic while crafting the final chapters of his story.Game of Throneshas already proven itself guilty of rushing the ending and ruining what could have been the most divinely perfect story ever told on screen. In turn, the author can at least use HBO’s tragic fumble to reenact the legacy of Daenerys Stormborn into a more acceptable chapter in the history of Westeros.
Game of ThronesandDune(Parts One and Two) are currently streaming on Max.
