With every arc in shonen anime, the stakes are amplified. The state of the world becomes grimmer, and the main characters level up to face the gravity of the threat they face. Most shonen anime and manga dedicate a substantial amount of time to the growth of the main characters, but notJujutsu Kaisen.

It could be a result of the shorter length of the series compared to the other long-running ones or simply a decision Gege Akutami made consciously. It’s common knowledge that the mangaka had drawn inspiration from bothHunter x HunterandNaruto, but they avoided one crucial aspect of the story that was quite prevalent in both the titles.

The Prevalence of Training Arcs in Shonen Anime

FromOne PiecetoDemon Slayer, most shonen anime have training arcs for the main characters. Right before they’re about to confront a sinister villain, the characters would take a break to hone their skills. These training arcs are especially prevalent inNarutoandHunter x Hunter. For instance,Masashi Kishimotodedicated a significant amount of time to Naruto’s training in the series. He trained under Jiraiya and Asuma to master Rasengan and the wind element, respectively.

To become well-versed with Sage Mode, he underwent intense training at Mount Myōboku, and then there was the final training arcwith Beeand Yamato. Similarly,Yoshihiro Togashidedicated his sweet time to drawing training arcs for the main characters. Gon and Killua underwent severe training in almost every arc. Sometimes, they returned from the battlefield just so they could train and get stronger. Some of the characters they trained under were Bisky and Wing.

So both Kishimoto and Togashi never shy away from giving training arcs to their characters. Akutami has drawn inspiration from bothNarutoandHunter x Hunter. Several aspects from both the manga were incorporated intoJujutsu Kaisen, except for training arcs. We also never witnessJujustu Kaisencharacters training, irrespective of who they’re up against.

DoJujutsu KaisenCharacters Just Not Train?

The absence of training arcs inJujutsu Kaisensparks questions about the source of the strength of its characters. This dearth of training could be a result of the story’s length and execution, but that’s not all.Gege Akutamiseems to have an aversion to drawing training arcs. Instead of full-blown training arcs where the primary focus of the characters is to train,JJKcharacters undergo similar evolutions during battles.

For instance, Yuji unlocked Black Flash during his fight against Hanami. Similarly, many characters find new techniques during battles. That’s not all, the time when Yuji and Todo faced off during the Goodwill Event could be considered training. Todo helped Yuji use his cursed energy efficiently in a way that complements his speed and strength.

Gojo also had to train after his first fight with Toji. He awakened his potential during the time between his fights with Toji. Akutami never delved into exactly what Gojo did but it’s safe to assume that he trained to become stronger. It needs to be mentioned that the progression ofJJKheavily depends on its fights. After the Shibuya Arc, the story jumps from one fight to the next. Having a training arc in between those fights will disrupt the momentum of the plot progression.

The Sheer Amount of Celebs Who Have Referenced Jujutsu Kaisen Will Shut up Everyone from the Eiichiro Oda Cult

Gojo’s example backs the belief that Akutami is averse to drawing proper training arcs. So, unlike other shonen anime and manga,Jujutsu Kaisendoesn’t have proper training arcs. However, the characters do train through experience, sometimes during fights and sometimes off the screen.
